I thought the rule only applied to shoes, but I have never seen a pair of white shoes that I would wear anytime. If anyone wonders what will happen to you if the break the rule, rent the great John Water's movie, "Serial Mom."

If you play croquet there, you must wear all white, since that is what the British do no matter what the season. I thought it was no white shoes after Labor Day, but surely white clothing anytime or every bride in America is creating a fashion faux pas..and isn't winter white clothing very "in" for winter..this is just silly..wear what you feel like and have fun

marionck. not sure if rudy vallee was from maine or not, but i do know he had a home here on kezar lake. this just happens to be the lake my best friend lives by and so have been past the house by boat. apparently for many years there was a rather elaborate tree house with a piano in it... as sound carries so well over water i imagine this was ummm interesting for his lakeside neighbors. and to range completely off subject - stephen king has a home on kezar lake now. but back on track i would mention that kezar was voted a most beautiful lake in america by national geographic.
i have never owned white shoes except pumps for wedding and i guess sneakers.
but now i want to know how in fact the white between memorial and labor custom began. i can't be that i just don't look good in white without a tan?

You know there's a movie starring Kathleen Turner where she's a psycho mom who kills someone for wearing white after Labor day. It's so ridiculous. I think people should wear what they want. The real question should be: do you look good in white? Or does it wash you out?

Speaking of "psycho moms", (Joan Crawford ) maybe we should start a new thread, travel related, about hangers in hotels ;-)

I share Joan's hatred of wire hangers, followed closely by the ones that are permanently attached to the rods. How much money do you think hotels lose from hanger theft ?

I think the OP asked a proper question about Caribbean custom. Some of us had a little fun in discussing US custom.

One of the best things about vacationing (for me) is that I'll never see most of the people I meet again. So if I'm not entirely *proper* in my fashions, I'm not going to fret about it...and I always prefer being barefoot.
Do what makes you comfortable.

I think that's what we've all been saying here

Now, about those hangers ;-) ??

Marion: As you and I know, no one really cares if you wear white in the Caribbean. White is always okay in the Caribbean. It's the Caribbean for goodness sake! They wear white yearround anywhere it's hot. But enough of the white business... I actually have a great fondness for wire hangers. They are so very useful in so many expected and unexpected ways for example, how many of us would still be locked out of the car but for wire hangers. Perhaps a thread on "What is your most interesting story about wire hangers?" LOL. A toast to you,Marion, on this almost weekend night. I find myself wondering if our friend Christie is having a great time on St. John? Warms the cockles to think...

Well, I'd wear white!

But then again I'd never heard the saying until recently - we don't have Labor Day in England, so the saying won't mean anything to anyone outside the USA

Although, In the 80's when white shoes were very popular I read that white shoes make your feet look bigger, I have never ever worn white shoes since.

Tuxedocat, here is my horrible coat hanger story: my sister was 7, I was 5, our mother bought a beautiful new dress for my sister and hung it at the top of the outside of our closet door. There it was, pretty as could be and up safely away. My sister jumped up and tugged at it, and the dress and hanger came crashing smack down in her face. The hook end of the hanger caught her in her eye and it was horrible. She still has the scar on her eyeball!!!! But she didn't lose her sight thank goodness. Dangerous little evil things. And they always get tangled up. Anybody else have a hanger story??
