OT,
It's one of those *rules* passed on, through the generations, to some Americans. Probably so Europeans would think that we are fashion conscious and care about social graces ;-)
The rule says no white dresses, /trousers before Memorial Day.
And no white (same as above) worn after Labor Day.
White shirts and blouses ar appropriate always.
And my Grandmother had an added rule about white shoes....NEVER
Are you more confused ;-) ?

I have followed that tradition for as long as I can remember!! That said, in the Caribbean, I have worn whatever color I wanted to as the temps just beg you to dress cool and carefree. However, DH is certainly not running around in an Elvis suit and white bucks

Thanks for the smile Virginia !
My gram passed away over 25 years ago, at the age of 97
So white bucks were after her time...although she did approve of Pat Boone, his music and his family values
She also approved of *off* white shoes during the summer season, and they usually had those *ventilation* panels. She just didn't like stark white. It may have had something to do with her height and shoe size. She was 5'8"...and in her generation that was one TALL lady
! I think she preferred for people to look at her face, not her feet ;-) !

I personally, am another stickler for "The Rule."
No white shoes for me after Labor Day anywhere, and the one pair of white sandals I have don't see much use even during the season.
(White pumps are for Minnie Mouse only.)
After traveling the region extensively, I don't recall seeing many people of either sex wearing white shoes in the Caribbean.

Now that the talk has turned mainly to shoes, I haven't even owned a pair of white shoes for as long as I can remember, nor has DH. I thought the original question referred more to shorts,slacks/capris or dresses etc. I got a little off track with the white bucks comment.

Brenda,
I thought Elvis was "blue suede shoes" and Pat Boone was "white bucks ;-)
And I wonder if anyone is old enough to remember Rudy Vallee (sp ?) who also had trademark shoes. I think they might have been the "saddle shoes" with the brown saddle, and of course his megaphone.
Virginia, wasn't he from Maine ? Or at least I think had some connection with the state ?
Just to keep this travel related
