Eleuthera Winding Bay Uhlman House
Just back from a week in Eleuthera. Flew Spirit Air out of LGA to Nassau ($75 RT). Left a day early to beat the blizzard, Spirit allowed the change without charge once it became apparent the storm was imminent.
Spent one night at Nassau Palm Resort ($116). Adequate for one night, would not recommend for prolonged stay.
Bahama Air to Eleuthera ($120 RT). Small, old plane, leaked rainwater onto passengers, fun flight.
Uhlman House was perfect for us. 2 BR, 1 queen, 2 twins, beautiful sun room with 180 degree view of beach and ocean. Came with most sundry items necessary for a week, just bring/buy food. Included snorkeling gear, sheets, towels, fishing equipment, satellite TV, gas grill, etc. Bring CD’s, nothing on the radio. Decks around the front, back and roof. Maid service is not included.
Winding Bay is beautiful. 11 houses plus the unoccupied Club Venta wrapped around a 2 mile long bay, completely ringed in silky pink sand. We never saw more than six people out at a time, usually no one.
The only downside of the bay was the garbage. There was a lot of washed up plastic, especially on the south side of the point. We picked up the area in front of the house, but a lot more needs to be done. A couple of cleanups a year would go a long way around the bay.
We had great meals at Sammy’s, Nort’side (best), Shelia’s, Mate & Jenny’s, and the Sunset. Dinners for two averaged about $50, including a couple of beers and the tip. Good pizza delivered by Papa George. Bought trigger fish at Tarpum Bay, couldn’t buy lobster or anything smaller than a whole grouper.
Rented small jeep from Stanton Cooper ($60 per day). Although we didn’t need the 4WD, the high clearance was absolutely necessary to get to the best beaches. We went to Ten Bay, Surfers, Hidden, Club Med, North Palmetto, and a number of small beaches we stumbled on.
Its important to get off the maid road and into the towns and settlements. There are many small stores, bakeries, and interesting sights just a few blocks off the Queens Highway.
It’s a toss up to decide whether to stay on the east or west coast of the island. The east side had a steady wind off the water, which was relatively cool mid-February, especially at night. Bring a jacket. On the west side you had a lesser wind at your back, and it typically felt warmer. Another advantage to the west side is having the afternoon sun, rather than the morning sun. We saw little plastic garbage on the west side, it was just about everywhere on the east side. The east side has better surf, better snorkeling, and longer stretches of wide beaches.
We spent our last night at Unique Village ($137). Very uncomfortable beds, paper thin walls, old and worn.

Hi Chuck,
Did you fly into Rock Sound or Governor's Harbour airport? What was the drive time to town from the house and also, drive time from the house to the airport?
We're looking for a house on Eleuthera in June. This is one of a couple of choices I was looking to rent.
Also, was it possible to have a boat at this location? I didn't see a dock nearby.

Rock Sound airport is only 10 minutes away. If connections work out better, Governors Harbour airport is only about 45 minutes.
The town of Tarpum Bay is only 5 minutes from the house. Rock Sound is just 5 minutes past the airport.
There aren't any docks on Winding Bay, although there once was a place to put in near the house (Uhlman Marina, according to a history of Winding Bay we read in the house). It may be possible to put in on the north side of the bay where there is an access road that comes down by the beach. There was a samll boat anchored off shore there last week. There are also places you could back a trailer in on Half Bay, which is the bay immediately south of Winding Bay.
The history of WInding Bay book did note that it is pretty difficult to get in and out of the bay. There aren't any markers, and a few parts of the reef are exposed at low tide.

Beach Girl...Winding Bay has a barrier reef off shore so bringing a boat in is tricky. No problem for locals so, if you are bringing a boat, check with Columbus Carey in Tarpum Bay, the go to guy in town. We have an 18 ft. Boston Whaler and tie it off to our buoy just off the beach. We have anchored power boats to 35" in the bay. Davis Harbor is a half hour away by car and provides dockage. We like to fly into GHB if you are coming directly from the States since Continental is most reliable, in my experience. From Nassau go to Rock Sound. Much closer and several carriers serving the airport out of Nassau. You are going to have a most enjoyable time visiting Eleuthera, a bit of real paradise. By the way, fishing can be spectacular off the Bay in June.
