El Conquistador
Hello,
Anyone ever stay at El Conquistador, Puerto Rico?
How do you get there from the air port? Car rental, taxi....?
Would it be a good/bad idea to travel there alone? (with respect to safety, not necessarily activities)
Thanks!

El Conquistador is great for kids. It has 2 huge pools. It is built on a cliff side so no beach on property but wait...the best part is they have their own private island. You access it by ferry and it takes about 10 mins to get to but it is very fun. They have a place to eat and all kinds of water sports. It is also a cool place to do a hike. There is an ice-cream shop in the hotel and a great spa for the adults. I've stayed here many times and would be happy to answer more questions.

We stayed at El Conquistador in July of 2000. We spent a few days after that at the Hyatt Dorado and explored its nearbu twin resort Hyatt Cerromar. For travelers with children, I'd recommend the Hyatt Cerromar. The children will have lots more fun with the pools and waterfall at the Cerromar than at the Conquistador. (You should look up the descriptions of the resorts' amenities on their Internet websites). We enjoyed our ocean view room at the Conquistador. However, the resort is on a cliff far from the ocean. One does not have the luxury of stepping on a beach within a few steps from the hotel. The grandeur of the Conquistador comes with the price of long walks to get from point A to point B within the resort, and the lack of a relaxing atmosphere. Their private island sounds nice, but it quite inconvenient. It's a very long walk from the hotel to the ferry dock. The ferry schedules are not frequent enough for the convenience of guests. We felt stranded on their island, which offers little besides swimming, sun bathing, exorbitant prices for snacks and drinks, and a long wait for the return ferry. In contrast, the Hyatt Dorado is like a cozy plantation, with a nice beach protected by a reef, beautiful grounds, nice rooms, and frequent shuttles to its sister resort of Hyatt Cerromar (more noisy, but more action for kids and teenagers). We travelled with a large group of friends and shared a rental van. Driving there is definitely hazardous for your life. However, it was convenient to get to the stores and restaurants outside of the resort.

I agree that the Cerromar grounds have better facilities for kids, but wanted to make a clarification. The Cerromar hotel rooms are closed. The pools and facilities are still open and available for those staying at the Hyatt Dorado Beach next door and at the Hacienda del Mar timeshares on the Cerromar property. I believe there were some earlier posts about what's still open on the Cerromar grounds that you can search for if you're interested in that as an alternative to the Conquistador.
