JA Girl,

So nice to see you posting (in living color !) again.

If you have not met Tiverton yet, I hope you will...someday soon.

We have never met, but his ability to read between the lines (even when I am being difficult !) has forged a friendship that I treasure.

As he is a gentle man and a gentleman he would rescue anyone with or without island fever

When I started to read your TR the other day, I knew I needed to wait til I had a Red Stripe in hand. Well I just finished...I know where I want to go to next!!.
Your family is beautiful and so happy.
I have true admiration for you and your wife for the work(?) put into traveling with young ones...obviously it was worth it all!
Thanks for a great TR! And have fun in Sept. we want more baby pictures!!

What a great time I had reading your report and loved the inserted pics! I felt like I was there with you all. What a great family you have and love to see travel passions passed on to the next generation! I think our kids have the travel bug as well. Its been too long since our last trip to Jamaica. How beautiful the people and beaches are there!

Now where's my jerk chicken and cold Red Stripe!

Thanks again!

CS, I must confess a secret. If you tell anyone I will have to tie you up and marinate your eyeballs in jerk sauce!

I have never...in my entire life...had jerk.

You see I am vegetarian and have been so for most of my life. I do not eat fish, chicken, pork, beef and never have. Nor do I think jerked vegetables would be all that tasty.

And to make it even worse, I cannot stand anything that is overly peppery. Well...except maybe Latin or Indian food

I can see Tiverton's expression of shock and disbelief as I type this.
I know...I know...what kind of Jamaican am I?
I hang my head in shame

No CS I do not have a jerk recipe at all to share.
But you know, I hear that Walkers Wood makes a really good Jerk sauce, maybe you could try that? Or maybe after Tiv gets over his shock he would offer up a recipe?

mahobay & beachgirls....thanks for your kind words. It was a bit of "work" and had us rethinking at several inopportune(sp?) moments during the trip. The twins didn't like their sleeping arrangements as much as their "cushy" cribs at home. It made for some interesting nights with not a lot of sleep. We would compensate by going to bed at 8:30 many nights. In hindsight, it was all worth it, of course. It had to have been as we are contemplating a soon return.

One of the things I'd like to add is that Negril Beach is so underrated. I have been to many Caribbean beaches and have yet to find one that surpasses Negril when you factor in the local vibe, culture and laid-backness elements. I guess I shouldn't promote it so much.....

JAGIRL: Do you have any favorite restaurants or things that you eat that are vegetarian in Negril?
We are leaving in two weeks for our first trip to Jamaica with our two daughters. One is a vegetarian and the other cannot eat wheat.
We are staying at the Moon Dance Villas and will have a cook, but we will want to eat out some, I'm sure.

Any suggestions?

bethyk,

I only pass through Negril these days on my way from Savanna-la-mar and haven't eaten there in a while.
But, trust me, there are so many options for your vegetarian daughter you will not have to worry. The "rasta" restaurants are usually really good and will have several veggie options.

I don't know what to tell you about your other daughter though, as I've never had to deal with that particular sensitivity.
One word of advice though for her : Ask lots of questions about what exactly is in the food. Ask about specific ingredients that may pose a problem. Jamaicans can tend to be vague about ingredients.

There is a good 'health food' store in Westgate Plaza, MoBay, across from the
Fortuna Pharmacy in Fairfield Plaza, which, if pricey, has a stock of vegan/gluten-wheatfree products. White flour on fried foods, patties, key lime pie crust and breads, there's not too much to be suspect about for wheat products in the Jamaican diet. However,
would recommend, even at the risk of
being seen as a mad white person that your daughter would suffer greatly if any of these products enter her diet. So let the manager, cooks know about the problem up-front.

CS, I am in total awe of you and your wife attempting such a long trip with your whole tribe, not to mention 6 suitcases and two baby seats. Yikes! I traveled to Europe with two babies some years ago and it was not easy.

I did enjoy your trip report with photos. Thanks for sharing with us. Now you've made me want to experience the Jamaican patties - we've haven't been there yet - so I found a recipe. Here it is if anyone else doesn't want to send away for them:

Tiverton,
The name of the health food restaurant/store in Westgate Plaza is "Adwa". And yes they are very pricey.

It's in Montego Bay though. I don't know if there is one in Negril.

By the way, in addition to beef/chicken/lobster patties

...there are also vegetable and ackee (a fruit) patties. Some of the patties will use cornmeal instead of flour.
What kind of fat is used in the patties I do not know.

Margaritaville in both Mobay and Negril has several vegetarian options including a vegetarian burger. Most chefs in the bigger restaurants will prepare a vegetarian meal for you.

As CS said in his report there are lots of fruit stands all over the place. Make sure to have some coconut water straight from the coconut if you can
