Crazy in wanting to go to Cancun in July??
Hello there
We, myself, hubby and 11 yr old son, are currently looking in traveling to either Cancun, Aruba or St Maarten.
Now my questions:
Is it a crazy idea in wanting to go there in Hurricane season?
How is the weather in general?
Are passports needed, or does BC, Green card and such suffice?
We own a Timeshare and are currently looking at the Royal Carribbean in Cancun, anyone been there?
Nothing definite yet in Aruba or St Maarten.
Any must see or do's, anything not worth the hype and effort to go do or see.
Anything else I need to have or should know before we go.
Thanks for all your info on this.

Aruba is out of the hurricane belt so that is a safer bet in the summer. I think that your whole family would love the island. There is a lot to do!
I am not sure if you need a passport to go to Aruba yet but it is always easier to have one!
Have a great trip!

I wouldn't recommend going to Cancun in the summer or hurricane time. We were there one April and a local told us their summer temp can get up to 120F. It was very hot in April and did I ever get a bad cold from the hotel's AC, cost me 2 days' vacation time.
Another thing to watch about Cancun: be careful how great the hotel's beach might look in pictures. A hurricane had washed away the beach in front of our hotel. Ask once you pick a place.
Other than that, I liked the hotel strip area in Cancun. Couple of malls and shopping areas there, easy to get to, great bus system, interesting tours/activities (just go when it's cooler down there).

120 F seems way out of line to me so i checked a world weather service and this is what I found for Cancun, both current temps and monthly averages. If it ever did hit 120 F it didn't last long it seems.

We went to Cancun in July with our three kids a few years back - and yes it does get hot!! We were at the ruins mid-day and the temperature on my husband's watch was reading 110.
Our kids loved the trip -so - it can be done - just use common sense. Do not plan streuous activities for the middle of the day. Beaches, snorkeling and jet ski trips, Xcaret - those are perfect day time ativites. I believe there are evening excursions to the ruins - that would make more sense.
There is no "island" breeze effect that you experience elsewhere so Cancun is warmer in July than most of the islands.
I believe the US passport requirement kicks in at the end of this year, if it hasn't already.

Well,
I am pretty sure that the timeshare that you are referring to is where we stayed in July 2003. What a great timeshare resort, actually. We had a 2 bedroom beahfront room, and all was really nice. This is a great beach and the room was great too--and it was only $250 per night at the time. The property is right next door to the Ritz, and that is where we enjoyed most of our meals. It is walking distance on the beach. It was HOT in July!! That was good by me tho. We went from the pool, to the beach, to the room, all day long. I can't answer all your questions--but the threat of hurricanes does exist! I do not know if I would return based on the extreme illness my daughter experienced, even with all the precautions, my hubby and I had lesser extents after returning home, and oddly, my son had nothing. Maybe all the illness is individual, I do not know. Not that you asked about this, but, if not for that , I probalby would return!
Hope this helps you

Average daytime high for July in Cancun is 90 F. The highest temperature ever recorded in Cancun in July was 102 F. (that's a big difference from 120 F.). The humidity, however, is high and thus the Temperature Humidity Index coupled with a "stong sun" makes it feel warmer.
