clueless on the islands
I apologise for my ignorance - I'm pretty clueless on the USVI. Which of the islands amongst the USVI do people recommend and for what reason (personal preferences). I'm contemplating going with a group of friends for new years and was looking for ideas

Thanks

In order of my preference:

St. Thomas (beautiful beaches, lots of activities and more night life than the other three, but more crime)

St. John (beautiful beaches, relaxing, not as much to do as in St. Thomas, low crime rate)

St. Croix (not the best beaches but has some nice scenery, also low key, and has a higher crime rate)

Try a text search on all three to get more information.

1. St Croix - tons of history, largest island, least congestion, roads not windy, least commercialism

St John - secluded and beatiful but expensive

St Thomas - too crowded, lots of shopping, crazy divers, windy roads

Safer than Jamaica, Mexico, and many other islands

The reason St. Croix isn't mentioned is because the island really does not compare to St. John or St. Thomas. It is much flatter and desert like. More like some of the bahama islands. Also, the locals don't have the best attitude towards the tourists in general.

Have to agree with the posts from Sam, Jay and John; pretty much covered it. We like St. John to visit, but stay in St. Thomas (been there 3 times). And we get to visit the British VI from St. Thomas too (don't forget your passport). Have a GREAT time.

You got it wrong GM, St Croix was my first choice. It is my favorite of the three islands becuase St John is too secluded and St Thomas is too busy. I am visiting with my husband and two kids in December. I guess the locals do have a reputation of not being too friendly but if you really stop and give them your time I'm sure you will learn something about the island.

dm I have a question for you.
If you tell us what it is you and your group are looking for, what you want out of this trip, we can tell you which island(s) fit your goals.
Specifics:
price range, type of hotel, how important are things like beach quality, seclusion vs nightlife, shopping vs quiet, choice of lots of restaurants vs few, activities vs relaxation.
