Car rental in Barbados?

We are going to Barbados for a week in December and staying at the Blue Horizon. Is it worth it to rent a car, or should we rely on foot/bus to see the island. If so, can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced rental agency? Thanks!

We are going to Barbados in December also. We've been there before and during that stay we only rented a car for a day. This time we're renting one all week since it is a fairly large island and I want to explore different restaurants and beaches. To find a car rental place, go to Barbados.org and put rental cars in the search engine. You're get a list of agencies and then can look and rates and even make reservations on line. Good luck and have fun.

We just got back from a week in Barbados. We were planning on taking the bus almost everywhere but our hotel (the Savannah) was kind of out of the way of everything and some of the routes were confusing to us so we rented a car for two days. It was well worth it. We actually should have rented it for 3 or 4 days. But the Blue Horizon is in a better location so restaurants and things will be more accessible for you. To see the interior of the island and the east coast, though, I recommend renting a car for at least a day or two. We are used to driving on the left but we had no trouble adjusting to the other side, though we did make sure we got an automatic! We got a tiny little car (no air conditioning which was fine) from Mangera Car Rentals for $110 US for 2 days. We had no trouble with it but they do have a 24hr service line. Free pick up and delivery. We filled it for $16US and went ALL OVER and still had half a tank left over. Make sure you get a map (though it still won't be much help) and leave yourself extra time if you have a reservation. It's pretty hard to find your way around the center, north and east parts of the island. Another thing I VERY highly recommend for sightseeing is an island safari because they take you places you can't get to in a car. They have a helpful website: www.barbadostraveler.com

We just got back from Barbados this week, and rented a car for one day --- it's really all you need to see the island. We left around 9am, and were able to see much of what we wanted in the day. Make sure you see the East Coast, it was breath-taking. I recommend a car over bus/walking, as you get to see much more and have the luxury of stopping wherever you want. Make sure you have a good road map, it definitely helps! Driving on the left takes a short while to get used to, but if you're a confident driver, it's easy. Good luck!

Definitely rent a car, but BE CARE on your way down to Bathsheba. The pitch is like almost straight down - pretty scarry to me, but well worth the trip. Hubby drives safe and knows how to do the driving on the right, so we had a great time driving around Barbados.
