Want to get my 25 year old single brother fun trip for Christmas - please help selecting appropriate island!

I would like to treat my brother to a trip for Christmas. He and his friend want to go on a trip something this winter. Which is a good island/resort for two 25 year old single guys that is fun, safe, not too expensive, not too quiet and where they will have a good time. Somewhere like Anguilla wouldn't be good because it is too quiet and they would like to meet someother people their age. On the other hand, some place filled with drunk obnoxious college spring breakers might not be the best either. What do you suggest that is nice, fun but would cost not more than $600 for 3-5 days for hotel, air and food? He is not a big traveler so somewhere that requires multi-flights, ferries, etc. wouldn't work. Are the club meds good? thanks

What a nice sister you are
Unfortunately, your budget may leave you few choices as airfare alone to most of the islands is $300+ from the east coast.
The least expensive destinations roughly in order are:
Bahamas (not technically in the Caribbean) - you can get cheap charter flights on Pacer Air
Dominican Republic - cheap charters on Apple
Cancun - Not an island, but party central with a large variety of hotels in all price ranges.
San Juan - good party scene

I'm sure you'll get other good recommendations, but you might also think about a cruise. Prices are down just a little due to the viruses going around, so you'd have to weigh the possibility of his getting ill with the cost factor being within your budget. (NOT a good present if he got sick, but chances are he would not.)

btw, Sally, Cancun IS filled with crazy spring breakers much of the time between Feb. to April, but it would be a good place for them if they are not traveling within that window...

This one is easy. Book him to Hedo II in Negril, Jamaica.

I think you would want to try for at least 5 days. Considering flying time, etc. 5 is minimum. It has all ready been said but agree with the DR thought for prices. Go with an AI and Apple Charter and you should make the price. I think Cancun is also a possibility but try and make it in Jan. before the spring breakers arrive. If you opt for PLaya Del Carmen you would avoid spring breakers even in Feb. That is a very nice gift, you are a thoughtful sister. I also like the Bahamas but may not be as warm as some of the others. PR is excellent, but rather prices those winter months.

Thanks for the responses. Having just gotten sick (fortunately a 24 hour bug only) during a recent trip to Europe I am sensitive to this issue and think I will rule out cruises. Assuming he goes for 5 days, does anyone have specific recommendations for where to go in the Bahamas (resorts, hotels with package deals)? How is the Dominican Republic? I am little nervous about him going there. Do you need a car? have people (reasonably) felt unsafe there? Also where in PR would you recommend. All of the places I have been seem more family oriented or for couples.

Hello again,
Punta Cana in the DR is very safe and he would not need a car. There are a bunch of AI places on a gorgeous beach, and not much else. It's not even really a town - just a huge resort area with casinos and bars in the hotels and resorts.

Look at this link for DR:

Try this for the bahamas:

(But I do agree with xxx that it can be cool in the Bahamas during winter.)

I'd suggest Play del Carmen or Cozumel, Mexico.

Sally, DR is safe. No reason to worry it is not that far. Is it the East coast he would be flying from? What places do you think he would like? Has he ever mentioned any place in particular he would like to go? I stayed in DR several years ago, at a reasonable place for a week we paid $800 per person. It was called Natura Park but from what I understand it is an area with seaweed. Other than that it was a lovely place and a great bang for the buck. Go to debbiesdominican.com for reviews. Punta Cana has wonderful beaches. They can take a tour of the city if they want and no he will not need a car at all. If you are uneasy about the DR then how about good ole Florida- like Key West?

actually I'm the traveler in the family not him so I think he would just want something easy (reasonably priced restaurants within walking distance; beach with chairs, towels, activities, etc. on site; bars, night spots right around without having to think about it) and nice but not so luxurious that he would feel uncomfortable. As I think this through I am thinking maybe florida or southern CA would be best. Thanks for the advice!

Sally, $600 is hard to find for the Caribbean, even for 2 nites.

I'd say CA is a good idea, but even in San Diego, during the next 3 mos. the temp there is between 65-70.

Wyndham Vacations is offering great plans. I know someone that planned a trip from JFK to Miami for 4 days/3 nites including non stop airfare via AA at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort for $635 / person. It's a lovely property, and they offer either a king or 2 queen beds, with a mini bar and coffee maker, cable, etc. This property is within 5 miles of the Art Deco District, Ocean Drive where the hot clubs are, and Coconut Grove.

Hope this helps.

I think I would stick with Florida as you don't seem real comfortable sending he and his friend off to Mexico or DR. Not sure about the price range, but your best best would be Florida for the warmth.Even in Jan/Feb it can get chilly. I like GM's idea. I think a 25 year old would have fun, in Miami, or Key West. Either would work. Whatever you decide, you only have 3 days till Christmas! Better decide soon. Let us know what you did.

In your price range, Miami is a good choice for two 25 year old single guys. The weather is iffey from December through February (you could get 5 days of beach weather or five days of temperatures in the 50's and 60's). However, there is a great nightlife, very cheap flights from the NY area (JetBlue is usually less than $200 from JFK to Ft. Lauderdale) and loads of cheap places to stay in South Beach. I stayed at the Beach Plaza a few weeks ago for $45/night through Expedia. There a number of other places for under $100/night, even in peak season. These hotels fall squarely in the "basic accomodations" category, but they are ok if you don't have expectations that are too high. (I don't think that there are any AIs, although I could be wrong about that.) No car is needed since everything is walking distance or a short cab ride.
In the Caribbean, I stayed at the Jack Tar Village in Montego Bay, Jamaica a few years ago in December. The room was about $130/night AI (including drinks) for two people. I booked that through Entertainment.com. It's a decent place and, although the nightlife at the hotel is pretty lame, there are some good places nearby.

Why not get a gift certificate or Amex gift certificates and then he can use them for the destination of his choice at the time he chooses. Wrap them with some of the Caribbean magazines. Sure beats guessing and guessing wrong.

I also think Miami South Beach is the most suitable place for all things you listed - GREAT nightlife , one of the BEST in the country ,many many CHOICES of flights ,accomodations , clubs (open till 5am )restaurants, shoppings so you can diffinitely do it for $600. Lots ,lots of singles of all ages so everybody will easily blend in , one of the places that you see a lot of beautiful people( models like)....Most Caribbean islands are not really places for singles /nightlife , except for a few -Cancun ,San Juan and some Club Meds for Singles (but $600 won't do it ) I've been to more than a dozen islands in the Caribbean . The only island I've been that have as much party as South Beach Miami is Mykonos - Greek island !
