Bucuti Overbooking?

I have read a few trip reports that mention the Bucuti overbooking. We plan to go in February, and I wonder if anyone has suggestions on how to avoid this happening to us. Is it best to book directly with the hotel? Pay rack rate? Do you think it makes a difference, or is it just the luck of the draw? Also, if this happened to you, were you compensated in any way? Thanks in advance.

The earlier in the day you arrive, the less chance you have of being 'walked' to another resort.

I did extensive research on the Bucuti before going there, including reading numerous trip reports and just about every post ever on Fodors about the place. There were a couple of posts about overbooking on wheretostay.com. Anyway, I found that just about all the people who reported any kind of booking or room problems at Bucuti were those who booked via a travel agency and not directly with the hotel. We booked directly with Bucuti, doing everything via email, and got very personalized and caring service. We may have sacrificed a discount, but IMO the rack rates at Bucuti are so much cheaper than what we had been used to paying at places like Swept Away and the Ocean Club that it was worth it. We had the security of having the reservations manager know us by name and know all our preferences. The service at Bucuti is one of the best things about it anyway, so you might as well take advantage of it.

Another suggestion - I'm not sure if this is "kosher" - might be to book through your agency to get the discount, but also to contact Bucuti directly via e-mail.

Keely - thank you for your very helpful and informative response. We did book directly with the hotel, and I did find their responses to us so far very friendly and prompt. So my impression so far has been very positive. Anyway, your mail has taken away most of my concerns - thanks again, we are looking forward to our visit!
