To get around San Juan would require taxis or a local bus.

There is no train or bus service from town to town so getting around the island would require a rental car. I have to agree once you add up taxi costs renting a car would be the way to go. If you are staying in a hotel and want to do some tours then book one through the hotel. Attractions are spread out geographically speaking, so renting a car is the only way to get from one place to another.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I think I will definitely rent a car then. I understand that most big hotels (where we'll probably stay) charges money to park. Can anybody suggest where else we can park? Can we park along the streets overnight? I don't mind if we have to walk 1-2 blocks away from our facility. Thanks, Emma

Emma - regarding parking - it depends where in San Juan your hotel is located. What hotel are you staying in? If it is in Condado or Old San Juan it is posible to find parking (you may need to drive around a bit). Isla Verde is much more difficult.

Just a note - There isn't much on-street free parking near the Caribe Hilton. However, there is a sports complex with a huge parking nearby that has very reasonable rates and further up towards Old San Juan there used to be a free parking for beachgoers (but it may have turned into a pay-parking too).
