Best Snorkeling?

Which island has the best off beach snorkeling? Looking for a new place to go that has great snorkeling. Thanks!

In the Caribbean the best off beach snorkeling that comes to mind is Loblolly Bay on Anegada in the BVI. You can get more info on Anagada at http://www.b-v-i.com/Anegada. Also, there is a nice place to stay right on the beach at Loblolly. See http://www.hvinet.com/anegada/page2.html
Fair snorkeling can be found off the end of Cooper Island. You have to swim or walk down to the far end. See http://www.cooper-island.com for a place to stay. Also, you can take the dive boat to other destinations since there are boats that go from the island a few steps down the beach. The back side of Mosquito Island is not bad. I am thinking about the places we have gone over the past 35 years which include Bonaire, Anquilla, Young Island, St. Vincent, Peter Island, Saint John, Virgin Gorda, Culebra, Vieques, Palm Island, Petit Saint Vincent, Guana Island, Jost Van Dyke, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres to name a few and I am sorry to say that the amount of sea life you find is disappearing fast. Today we see nothing like that available 35 years agao. At one time the area just off the coast of Yucatan around Akumal was wonderful. The area is now called the Maya Riviera and who knows what it it like today as it has been years since we have snorkeled there. While not in the Carribean, the area around the Turks and Caicos might offer better than average snorkeling but we have only been to Salt Cay and this is not a good sample of the area. Also the out islands of the Bahamas offer another area of consideration. Except for Harbor Island, it has been many years since I have been in the area but Harbor Island is not bad if you swim out 4 or 5 hundred yards to small areas of coral.

We have been to many islands and found Turks and Caicaos to not only have beautiful, white beaches with very calm and clear waters but also the best snorkling - even off shore.

Paige,
I think Grand Cayman has some of the best off beach snorkeling!! There's also the Stingray Sandbar, but you have to go by boat to that. Unbelievable experience though!! You actually swim with the stingrays!! Off beach snorkeling can be found over the entire island, and easy access! Good luck!

We enjoyed Tortola, St. John, and Eleuthera for right-off-the-beach snorkeling!

Paige--GO TO WATERLEMON CAY AT ST. JOHN! Sea turtles, rays, barracuda--and total seclusion. No one else is ever there. But be prepared for a 45-minute hike from the car to the beach. (And mind the goats!)
