owa: I have also been to Bonaire 2 times. The last visit was in 2003 I believe and it is not a snorkelers paradise. It is though a scuba divers paradise in that we also dive and you can go down only 40 ft. and see amazing sites. We found visibility of 15 ft. and thought it was just some underwater turbulance but the boat captain said 20 ft. is the norm since about 2000.
As for Grand Caymen we stayed at Cayman Kai also and Pink Beach both near each other and found the snorkeling to be far better than Bonaire but not as good as St. John. Since the hurricanes of last year a friend of ours that we often travel with said the coral at 5-10 ft. was badly damaged and I assume ever avid snorkeler knows it takes 5-8 years to get reasonable re-growth. My friend chartered a professional snorkel boat with his wife in search of the best spots off GC. After a 5 hour outing he felt he wasted $325, if that is worth considering. Again, if you are talking diving he said it was almost as good as it was when we went together 5 or 6 years ago.Hope that helps, if my opinion is worth anything.

I saw some of my best snorkeling in Turks and Caicos (topped what I saw in GC). Coral Garden resort had great off shore snorkeling as there is an excellent reef right out front. I posted pictures on this site late last week...
