BERMUDA OR U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS?!!
I am planning my honeymoon for early May 1998 and need advice on the location.
My fiancee and I are 25; we are beach bums but also enjoy seeing the sights, snorkeling, boating, and shopping. As far as NIGHT LIFE goes we enjoy going to bars and clubs but relative to most 20somethings we go to bed early and aren't too wild at the clubs.
We have had a reservation made for us in Bermuda at a nice location but are worried that, although it is your typical honeymoon destination, that we will be surrounded by travelers much older than us - hence we will not fit into the activities.
My parents have also offered us a time share week in St. Thomas. The fact that it's a time share is great - and they think that St. Thomas is more geared towards young "kids" - but reading about the USVI does paint as pretty a picture as Bermuda. It sounds like the islands are more modernized, almost more dirty, and that it is geared towards a younger crowd but only because there is so much nightlife.
I think we are looking for some island culture - will we get that as much in the USVI as we will in Bermuda? Last spring we went to Key West and had an amazing time - we are looking for something similar - but with more beaches.
Can anyone supply any opinions to my dilemma?

We went to Bluebeard's Castle in St. Thomas last March. It was great and we are going back next March. We are staying at a different place though, the Elysian Beach Club. We had some problems with Bluebeard's Castle which they did not look after well so we are not impressed with them but the island was very nice. We are early 40's (Canadian) and have travelled a lot in the Caribbean. We went to the Green Room and Barnacle Bill's for night life on the island. We didn't even go for a meal to Hard Rock Cafe! Lots of great shopping if you can afford it. WE have not been to Bermuda. This island is definitely American! And there are a lot of cruise ship visitors. Downtown can get very crowded. 8 ships were in on Wednesday. We realyy enjoyed our day jaunt to St. John Island adn are planning to include it again. It is a very quiet and beautiful island. Very few people. Hope this helps somewhat.

If I had to choose between Bermuda and St. Thomas I would pick Bermuda. I lived on St. Croix and visited St. Thomas several times and was not impressed. It is noisy, congested and not fun in town when a ship is in port. From what you are looking for Bermuda sounds taylor made. Call the Bemuda Tourist Board and have them send a packet of materials. There are some very elegent smaller hotels and guest houses. You might even look into renting a house or cottage. Not every property is on the water but you can rent a motor bike or take the bus. Keep in mind that is may be a bit on the cool side during the month of May. Eating in Bermuda can be very expensive, however they do have a huge selection of restaurants featuring food from all over the globe where you can get a good meal for under $25.00 a person. There is alot of information to be had regarding places to eat on the island in Fodors site broken down in price ranges. Enjoy!!! and best wishes.

Congratulations. You have a tough choice...they are both beautiful. I spent a week sailing the BVIs and stopped briefly in St. Thomas. St. Thomas is very americanized with fast food places but great shopping. The positive of going there is you can take side trips to St John and the BVIs. My husband and I spent a week in Bermuda last Oct. and loved it. Prefered St. Georges cause it was quainter. we found lots of great shopping and restaurants. It will be cooler...I did much less snorkeling because of the water temps. Bermuda has a great web site to help you. The island is very easy to get around. I probably am not much help but feel free to e-mail me with any questons. Both are beautiful I have heard Bermuda is the most expensive vacation deestination right now.

St John and the BVI are beautiful and rustic. I love them both. Great beaches, plenty of good food, so so nightlife. More on St John than the BVI, but not a lot. The style is casual all the time.
Bermuda is more elegant in style, you may find you have to dress for dinner and no bathing suits on the streets. It is pricey but there are places (I will be glad to recommend some) where you can get a great meal for a very reasonable price. I love Bermuda and go there at least once a year.....however I am 50 and I get my fun diving and swimming and riding my moped. That there is virtually no nightlife (unless you count bars) doesn't bother me at all. Bermuda is beautiful, clean and very civilized. Check out their website at www.bermudaonion.com

I have 3 words for you... BERMUDA, BERMUDA, BERMUDA!! My husband and I have been twice in 92 on our honeymoon and in 94 and loved it. We're about the same age as you and seem to have the same interests. There are great beaches for swimming, snorkeling, etc and there are quiet beaches for relaxing. There are some great pubs for meeting people and great sightseeing. It is very clean and the people are extremely friendly. We always rent a moped it's the best way to see the island. I agree w/the other people that you can get some good info at Bermuda's web site. Congratulations and enjoy which ever island you pick!!!

Definitely go with Bermuda. I spent 10 days there in April of 1994. It was absolutely beautiful and there is plenty to do. I'm about the same age as you are and I thought the nightlife was great there is anything from the local pubs to dance clubs. The locals are really friendly and willing to help you out or give you ideas on what to do. There are small beaches all over the island you can pull over on the side of the road and step onto the beach. It is expensive but I think it's a great place to honeymoon. Have a great trip.

My advice is BERMUDA ! BERMUDA ! BERMUDA !!
I have been to St Thomas and The British Virgin Islands ( I much Preferred BVI Islands). But for A honeymoon especially in May ( our honeymoon was in May in Bermuda many year ago) you can't beat Bermuda in May and June Bermuda is absolutely loaded with young honeymoon couples and the hotels cater to them . Especially certain hotels like Elbow Beach, Sonesta etc. You can't go wrong with a May honeymoon in Bermuda in May !! Bring your Wallet !! But Bermuda was made for honeymoon's !! Email me if I can be any more help !! Save the timeshare in St Thomas for another year. If you like a gorgeous beach Elbow Beach Hotel is hard to beat !! Good Luck !!

I noticed you lived on St Croix. I was thinking it would be a good first-time Caribbean destination for 4-5 days at Christmas. Any suggestions for inexpensive travel from Washington, DC and accommodations for my wife and 7 and 11 year old boys and I? Thanks!

I was born in Bermuda. I have also travelled extensively around the carribbean. Bermuda is very pretty and romantic. The beaches are incomparable with some having pink sands. Plenty of water sports and excursions. Accomodation is varied from private apartments on or near the beach to small cottage colonies(excellent) to large hotels. Public ttransportation system is one of the best in the world with buses and ferries. Mopeds are popular but we drive on the opposite side of the road and our roads are in excellent condition but narrow compared to many places. We have excellent shopping from europe. Yes we are expensive but clean and very hospitable and very pretty and relaxing. May is a great time to visit since it is the shoulder season before we are bombarded by cruise visitors. The weather is approximately 75-80%25 in May.
Hope this helps. For additional info please call the Bermuda Department of Tourism 800 number in the US or feel free to ask me additional questions.
Whatever you decide enjoy yourselves.

I am getting married next year and also planning a wedding. We are both 26. We went to Bermuda last year on a 7 day cruise and it was great. We are looking at other places but can't seem to find anything better than Bermuda. There wasn't a lot of night-life but enough to make it fun. Bermuda is very clean. We rode the whole island on mopeds and didn't see a bad spot. You won't regret Bermuda if you choose to go trust me.

Once you been to Bermuda you'll go back! I have been to both places - Bermuda is a definite winner.
I went with 5 other girls in May - weather was wonderfull. The locals don't go into the water until labour day - we did - beaches were uncrowded -
water was warm. You'll find many secluded beaches
and coves for a romantic honeymoon. Rent a moped and tour the island yourself - you can ride around the whole island in a short time. Locals are very
friendly and helpful - always gave us the right of
way when driving - they seem to tolerate alot from
us tourists. We stayed at a guesthouse - had a wonderful woman cook us breakfast and tell us stories every morning - she was such a delight! Many
things to see and do on the island - it's clean and
magical - you'll fall in love with it. As for nightlife - us girls range in age from mid to late
twenties - there's many pubs that have some sort of
musician playing and a few places for dancing - we
opted for the pubs. Food was delicious - never had a bad meal - if you ask around you can find some
restaurants that are less expensive. We went to a
hotel one night (package deal) had dinner and a
show - had to dress up for this, men in ties and jackets. Bermuda with it's pink sand and beautiful
scenery. It's not cheap, but worth every penny -
I promise you'll want to return again and again like
me.

I vote for Bermuda. We have been there twice, both times off cruise ships. The beaches are beautiful. Public transportation is fine. We docked in Hamilton one time and St. George's the other. Horseshoe bay is wonderful. Go, you will not regret it. Have a great time.

You really have no chooice to make if it's between Bermuda and the USVI. There is really only one choice - Bermuda. Of course, as a Bermudian living in Bermuda I am biased! My island is clean, beautiful, and most of all SAFE for tourists. Been to St. Thomas lately with those guide books that tell you where you shouldn't go? You won't find that in Bermuda. Even the cops don't carry guns - I know, i used to be one. Contact me if you would like any recommendations, or contact the Bermuda website.

Bermuda is beautiful, clean, and has the nicest, friendliest people in the world. Flowers are in bloom all over the island and the water is a beautiful blue/green. There are some really beautiful, romantic natural coves on Warick Beach. They don't even look real. Yes it is expensive but so is the rest of the carribean. What you get for your money in Bermuda is worth it. It is your honeymoon. I took the local bus all over the island. You can buy a day pass and it goes everywhwere. I would be careful on the mopeds because there are lots of curves and they drive on the left. The best thing about Bermuda is that you don't have the Las Vegas crowd that wants to drink, gamble and get loud. The people are there to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Island. Its the Best! If I could live there I would. Have a great time!

My husband and I now visit Bermuda once a year, our 4th visit coming up. We are older than you, but we encounter many honeymooning/young couples who love Bermuda and vow to return. We like a small hotle in Hamilton..but the younger couples often prefer the big hotels with their shops, pubs, beaches, pools, golf courses. We love the public transportation..the ferry ride from Hamilton to the Dockyard is fun even if you don't disembark, and you ride with the "locals" who really do wear Bermuda shorts to office jobs (the men). The people in Bermuda are WONDERFUL, no false friendliness..they ar genuine, dignified, polite and very helpful. There are many pubs with live music. I think you would love Bermuda as so many of the people here do, and you'll want to go back..there's something about it.........

Could you give me some info on Bermuda in January? I will be going to a meeting on Jan.17-21, and will stay an extra 4 days (Marriott Castle Harbour). What should I expect for temperatures & weather? Secondly, what kind of activities would you recommend for that time of year? Our company has offered us an activity, and the Dolphin Quest was one suggestion. Since the extra days are at our expense, economical activities are needed. Any tips or ideas?

Bermuda is a perfect honeymoon island, and
possibly too expensive and civilized for
lower-tier travels. Go for pink sand, turquoise
sky, golf, and spending time with your honey in your
room or an expensive restaurant -- not a place
to go with out a significant other, or a desire
to "party" or dive
The thing about Bermuda, which obviously the other
post-ers enjoy, is that it is completely civilized.
This island was discovered, other than by wild pigs
and onions, by people relieving the Jamestown colony,
the oldest colony in British North America.
Obviously the history is great; excellent forts,
sea-view cemeteries, etc. The beaches are everything
you've heard. Rent a scooter and immerse yourself
in both.
Granted Bermuda is gorgeous, although I wouldn't
overstate the friendly natives thing, and Cincinnati
has better nightlife. The exception being the
great "black" nightclubs (which have become a
little crime-ish, rumor has it) which have an
awesome island-funk atmosphere.
The diving is much more an activity to fleece
tourists, it's certainly not a destination
for anyone looking to do more than learn.
Also, I couldn't find any restaurant open for
dinner where meals were less than $50 for two
