My husband and I are planning our 15 wedding anniv. which is the end of sept.
we've been to aruba, st. lucia, bahamas...we want something really upscale, yet laidback; we will just relax, read, veg. etc. we are concerned about hurricane season...we would love any suggestions!

As for the weather, Barbados is a bit below the "hurricane belt" and has been spared many times but the way the weather patterns are these days it's anybody's guess. The later in the season you can go, the better.

It is hurricane season, but the odds are hugely in your favor on Barbados because it is south of most of the hurricane tracks. Once in 50 years or so does Barbados get a direct or close hit. A great resort is Coral Reef Club, low-rise or cottage style on beautiful grounds, nice beach. Family owned for some 50 years. Classy!

Only you can decide if you're comfortable weighing the risks of traveling at the end of September. Although Barbados is not in the buckle of the hurricane belt, so to speak, there are no guarantees that it will or will not get hit during any given season. Definitely take out trip insurance, no matter where you go. I would also suggest that you consider postponing the celebration of your anniversary until perhaps mid-October.

Barbados' west coast is full of elegant resorts. Coral Reef gets good reviews year in and year out, and I can personally second the suggestion of Cobblers Cove. My husband and I were there in late August and were fortunate to get mostly outstanding weather. The place was fairly quiet, as it was winding down for its annual closing, which I think is the entire month of September, but perhaps longer. Keep annual closings in mind when booking a trip--anywhere from August to October many resorts and even restaurants have annual closings for maintenance, rennovation, etc.

If you want to minimize your risks, try Curacao for a combination of laidback elegance and a distinct culture unlike the other islands. It is farther south than Barbados and offers more of what you're looking for than, say, Aruba or Bonaire.

been considering Curacao as well, we love Aruba but were just there and we really want to try something new...I will look up the resorts you referred and may decide to delay our trip. thanks for the heads-up about resort annual closings...we actually considered the cuisinart resort in Anguilla but they are closed then...
