Barbados: Alexandra Resort Residences??
Can anybody tell me about The Alexandra Resort Residences, a Timeshare Property in Barbados? We have a chance to stay there. What is the beach like? Is it a good beach for long walks? Does the property face west? (sunsets!!). Is there a grocery store nearby? Is it close to a major airport? Is the area safe? Are there nearby restaurants where we can walk?

hi ob1, if you have the chance to go - take it.
beach -grace bay beach is gorgeous and the water a stunning tourquoise color. it is 12 miles long and great for walking. the sand is white white, never gets hot on your feet and is oh so soft!
sunset - the beach faces north. you can see sunsets from the beach and hotel balconies, etc.
grocery - is about 10 mins ride from alexandra by taxi. pricey but they will have most anything you need.
airport - there is only one airport. code is pls. alexandra is approx. 20 min taxi from airport.
safety - most people consider provo to be one of the safest places to visit in the caribbean. things will not be taken if you leave them on the beach to snorkel...no hawkers on the beach selling stuff.
food - provo is known to have fabulous restaurants. a few of them will be in walking distnce. but really they are spread out around the island.
car - yes. if you want to go to restaurants and look around.
provo is a small, coral based island. it is fairly flat and scrubby but very beautiful. it is all about the water - really not much nightlife. you can drive end to end in under 90 mins.

We stayed at the Alexandra Resort a few years ago. It is on the beach. We were very lucky and had a 4th floor unit which overlooked the beach and a great sunset every evening. The answer is YES to all of your questions. T&C is a quiet island - mostly for relaxing and snorkeling and swimming and walking the beach. Many good restaurants.

Hi, I think Virginia answered most of your questions, but I will offer a few opinions. I stayed at the Alexandra last December and would not hesitate to return. I'm not sure when you are planning you trip, but the timeshare building closed during the off-season this year to do some renovations. I'm not sure if they are open yet or not but suspect they will open soon for high season. They should be really nicely updated (to match the newer buildings) when they are done with the remodeling. The Alexandra is a really nice place if you don't require a lot of personal service. It is newer, mid-priced condo resort. There is a beach bar, but it is not always open. Staff don't serve drinks on the beach or spray you with cool water like at the Regent Palms next door. There may be construction on-site (they are supposed to be building one more building towards the back of the property at some point), but since the timeshare building is closer to the beach, I doubt it will have much impact.
I generally agree that Provo is very safe. I went there myself twice and walked around everywhere during the day and to/from some restaurants at night without any problems. However, like everywhere else, there is some crime. Within the last year, I read about two incidents at or near the Alexandra. A couple walking back from dinner to the Regent Palms (next door to the Alexandra) was robbed, and the desk clerk at the Alexandra was robbed. I don't mean to scare you, but I think it is good to know these things. Like I said, I wouldn't hesitate to go back and walk alone, although I did not feel that comfortable walking back at night on the road behind the Alexandra (nothing happened, it just seemed too dark and deserted), so I didn't do it again.
Besides the restaurant (The Orchid) at the Alexandra, the closest resorts heading east on the beach with restaurants are the Regent Palms (Parallel 23 and pool bar), the Somerset (O'Soleil and a more casual pool restaurant whose name I don't remember), the Sibonne (Bay Bistro), and the Sands (Hemningways). All of these are within a half of mile.
Grace Bay is the most amazing beach for long walks. It is supposed to be 12 miles long, so I still have a lot of ground to cover on future trips.
