Bahamas in Sept.

Daughter and friend in their 20's are thinking of staying at or near the Atlantis the week before Labor Day. Does anyone know if it is hurricane season yet? Also, how nice are the Comfort Suites and would they be disappointed in staying there versus spending the extra amount to stay at the Towers.?.

We went the first week of Sept. 2003 and barely missed hurrican Ivan. It turned during the night and hit Bermuda instead. Haven't keep up with the weather for that area since then.

I would definetly stay at the Comfort Suites and use the facilities at the Atlantis since everything at the Atlantis is so overpriced. Get a decent priced room at CS to make up for the other expenidtures they will have to endure at the Atlantis.

For the age range, look at Breezes. It caters to a younger crowd and it all inclusive. They won't be able to use the facilities at the Atlantis though if that's more important to them.

September is the peak of hurricane season, and the Bahamas are certainly among the top spots for hurricanes to hit. Get trip insurance with a trip interruption component (read the fine print) if planning a trip this time of year.

The official Atlantic/Caribbean Huricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 with the most active period for storms being September 1 through October 15. These dates are approximate as hurricanes can and do occur outside those dates.

You can check the historical frequency of hurricanes hitting a specific island (for the last 160 years) during a specific time period by going to the climatology section at www.stormcarib.com.

Hurricane Season may not be the only issue in September.
Since last year the season was a bust.. most hotels are planning on paring down and closing some towers, restaurants and limiting other amenities to get thru the off season.

Wynhdam will be closed for 8 weeks. Others are considering the same or other options.

Pay close attention as you get closer to that season.

This might be a blessing for low rates. Amenities might be lacking

Looking for a relaxing, beach, some activities, all-inclusive. Are we taking a risk with going to Bahamas from Aug.30-Sept.4? Are there any thoughts about the Breezes or maybe another location? We looked at an all-inclusive in Cabo, but it mentions hurricane season there as well. We want a nicer hotel than Comfort Suites.

The Comfort Suites is not all inclusive. The draw to that hotel is they allow you to use the pools, beach and waterpark facilities at the Atlantis.

You never know about the weather or hurricanes. You always take a chance with them between June and November. Will a hurricane or bad weather ruin your vacation? No one can predict the future. If you choose to go, buy the trip/hurricane insurance in which you can cancel for any reason, not just if your flight is cancelled or your hotel closes.

If you can, change your dates. May or usually the first part of November before Thanksgiving are better.

Destinations considered outside of the hurricane belt are Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire. There is a Breezes on Curacao, but it is quite family friendly. AI's on Aruba are few and far between and expensive. Aruba has many very nice restuarants in all price ranges within walking distance to the hotels located on Palm Beach. Look at the Holiday Inn.

The final decision is yours if you want to take a chance with the Aug/Sept dates. We've taken the gamble several times and though we never got caught, it's too nerve racking watching the weather channel's storm tracker. We don't go during those months anymore.
