Aruba vs. St. Lucia

We are deciding between St. Lucia and Aruba for our September 2009 honeymoon. All we really want for our honeymoon is to be able to lay in the sun and relax - as well as to feel safe when we are off the resort. Any suggestions on which island would be best to go to??

I've been to both islands and really enjoyed them both. I went to Aruba with a parent at the Aruba Grand and had a great time on the beaches, para sailing (most beautiful beach I have ever seen is Palm Beach in Aruba), and seeing the Natural Bridge and Baby Beach. It's laid back and friendly. I was there during the Natalee Holloway disappearance and even though it was a terrible time for both her family and Aruba, I never once felt unsafe. It's a beautiful island and has no threat of sharks because of all of the dolphins - so if you are into scuba diving, it might be a nice place to go. Visibility of the water is very good.

St. Lucia is also very, very nice. I stayed there with my significant other at the Sandals Halcyon. It's nice to have the Sandals properties there - included drinks/food/water sports/transports to the other Sandals properties. If you go, you MUST take a trip to the Pitons - they are incredible and truly worth the entire trip to St. Lucia. Also, if you are a rum drinker, you must go to the top of Marigot Bay where there is a little rum shop with local rum (and banana mustard.) That rum is the best I've found in my life and in itself made St. Lucia one of the best trips ever. We went out a few times in St. Lucia - one time to a "Friday Night Jump Up" in Gros Islet, to Castries for shopping (our luggage was lost), and to a rain forest for a hike. No one bothered us really, but we were haggled a bit to buy things. I felt slightly less safe in St. Lucia.
Both places are amazing - relaxing, beautiful, and perfect for honeymooners. I'd probably be more inclined to go back to Aruba if I were to choose one.

WOW..these are two TOTALLY different islands.
St. Lucia is lush and mountainess. Aruba is flat anad is a desert island.
Aruba is a lot more developed than St. Lucia and therefore is much easier to get around.
YOu are going in September which is hurricane season and Aruba is considered to be outside the hurricane zone.
The beaches in Aruba are bigger and better than those in St.Lucia.
Aruba also has very little rain and lots of sun. They also have casinos if that matters.
Do you want all inclusive??
It's a matter of personal preference, but based on your wants, I would chose Aruba.

All of your criteria (sun, sand, September, "feeling safe") point clearly to Aruba.

I would agree with BaltoTraveler. We just got back from Aruba. This was our 3rd time there and our 3rd time staying at the Westin. I like the Westin and the Hyatt. You can walk along the road in the high rise section or along the boardwalk and feel safe. There are so many more restaurants and shops to choose from since we were there 5 years ago too. We never do all-inclusive there. Each time we've been there, the weather has been perfect. It is windy there and it has a dry climate which makes the island desert like but we love it there. The bus runs constantly too which is nice. It can take you into town where the cruise ships dock for around $2 r/t.

Both island are out of this world but I would go with St. Lucia anyday since it is so luscious. We love the idea that we could have done so many excursations and tours especially the zip line through the rain forest. We used Serenity Vacations and Tours for our sight seeing and their ambassador service which was out of this world. The staff was fantastic especially John and Sherma. You can checkout their website at serenitytvl.com or call them tol free 1866-766-0794.
In Aruba we spend most of our time lazing in the sun on louge chairs at the beach which was rather peaceful. This island was more desert like hence the reason why we choose to chill rather than do any site seeing.

I have only been to Aruba, but based on your criteria, I would choose Aruba. StLucia is more lush, but is not known for good beaches. According to what I have read, it is not as safe to leave the resorts. It is just not as developed as Aruba.
For beach, sun, and good dining, go to Aruba.
