Anguilla and delayed luggage
We are going to Anguilla in a week and a half and are wondering about delayed luggage in Puerto Rico. We are flying via American Eagle and have heard that due to the short runway as quoted on Bob Green's webesite (http://new.ai/) "Anguilla's airport runway is too short and not level enough, and doesn't have re-fueling facilities. This means that American Eagle can't carry a full load of people and luggage into Anguilla. We have had our luggage left behind in San Juan several times. Therefore, you should pack shorts, swimsuit, t-shirt and toothbrush in a Carry On Bag. Perhaps this is all you need anyway!"

Has anyone traveling there experienced this sort of set back? We will pack accordingly: i.e prescriptions, swim suit etc. What we are wondering is: is this a common occurence? If so, how long does it take for the luggage to arrive?

Never-the-less we will have an amazing time...thanks!

We just returned. They were "bumping" people off the American Eagle flights in San Juan (final offer $400 plus hotel for the day and dinner and guaranteed to be on the 9pm flight.).
If you can get on, your luggage will. Worse case scenartio, your luggage will arrive later. AA is strict about 2 pices of luggage plus 1 carryon.
We thought it was strange they were bumping people from unfull flights. They were doing this for other American Eagle Flights. The explanation was, "Due to FAA regualtions..."

David,
Next time fly to St.Maarten and take the ferry to Anguilla right from the airport - you'll have your bags with you, so no chance of them getting lost. See www.link.ai for ferry info. It's only about $20 each way - runs once a day to/from Anguilla.

I'm going to state the obvious: pack light and use carry-on bags only. That way you'll never have to worry about your luggage getting separated from you and you'll never have to wait in line at baggage claim. We've adopted this policy for all of our trips since 1992 and it's worked out great. As for American Eagle from San Juan to Anguilla, we've never had a problem and find it much more pleasant (and quick) then flying to St. Maarten. Another advantage of flying into Wallblake Airport on Anguilla is that you can walk right over to Island car rental and pick up a car.

Good luck!
