Advice on Bequia

I would really appreciate help in picking a place to stay on Bequia. My husband has business on St. Vincent next month. We love to snorkel, so decided we would take about 4 days, and picked Bequia. From what I've read, many hotels don't have AC. Will this be a problem? I noticed that Friendship has some rooms with AC. Which is the best hotel for easy beach snorkeling? Any other advice is welcome. Thanks

Owa, if I may piggy back another question to anyone. I am looking for a 4 to five star hotel in Bequia or another Grenadine location with wife and children 7 and 9.

Can anyone recomend a hotel in St. Vincent or Bequia? I read all the posts/forums and checked

Just need a good recomendation!

To OWA: Bequia is a very small, quiet and laidback island. There are not a lot of hotels to choose from but check out Hotel Frangipini or Sunny Caribee Plantation. Perhaps one of them will fill your needs.

To CROIX: I doubt you'll find anything that qualifies as a 4 or 5 star hotel on Bequia. But on other Grenadine islands check out Raffels (formerly Carenage Bay Resort) on Canouan, Young Island (right off the coast of St. Vincent), Palm Island Resort, Cotton House on Mustique and Petit St. Vincent Resort on Petit St. Vincent.

Check out the Friendship Bay resort. We had lunch there and took a tour of the place last year. It's a lovely property and the rooms are all unique. Some have a/c but the buildings are on the hillside so a/c may not be an issue. When we were there, there was a breeze and there were ceiling fans. The beach bar is neat with swings for bar stools. I would love to stay there sometime.

To Owa

There are a number of reasonable snorkelling sites in Bequia that are easy to access.

- off the far end of Lower Bay Beach - stay at Dawn's Creole Hotel or Keegan's Guest House or Low Bay Guest House - recommended in that aorder)
- Rocky Bay in Admiralty Bay - a water taxi will easily take you there)
- Friendship Bay - the small reef in front of the gingerbread cottage; on really calm days only, snorkel along the reef out to Semple Cay
- drift snorkel from Park Bay, along Industy Bay and into Spring Bay (swim to beyond the reef at Park and follow the current - make sure tide is high and don't get swept in too soon). Stay at Spring Hotel or Crescent Beach Hotel.
- Bequia Dive Adventures has good snorkel trips

To croix - there are no 4-5 star hotels on Bequia or St. Vincent. The closest would be Camelot on St. Vincent and Frangipani on Bequia and I don't think they would be all that great for children your age. Friendship Bay is sometimes very good and sometimes dreadful...seems to depend on the mood swings of the owner.

As Sunnyboy sugests, have you considered the resort islands - Young, Palm, PSV - or Cotton House and Firefly on Mustique ? Although adult-oriented, they might be more what you are looking for. My understanding is that Raffles on Canouan will now not be opening until September 2004.

BTW, Sunny Caribbee/Plantation House has been closed for the past couple of was seized by the government in the context of stamping out money laundering.
