advice for a trip to Bahamas?

advice for a trip to Bahamas?
I want to surprise my wife and take her to Nassau for her birthday.
But, I am don't know a thing about Bahamas...I plan to stay 10-12 nights, not too expensive (5 stars out of the question
I am not a millionaire and I don't want to pretend to be...
I tried to read everything about it, from any/every bulletin boards...not very helpfull...
So, the questions:
1) any agents which are really good in booking vacations for bahamas?
2) good hotels?
3) about meals...my wife is not a big eater, I am so so...what would be a good decision? All-inclusive or just pay for the rooms and eat arround? What about the prices? Any chance to find pork steaks on the island?
4) how is the atmosphere, night life?
5) how about the beaches...someone was writing somewhere that some are dirty, etc...
6) hotel staff? I am not to picky...I like clean rooms and staff without attitude, even if I will not throw thousand arround, I am still paying them to provide service...
7) things to do and see arround?

What made you pick the Bahamas, and what time of year are you going? Perhaps you can get more for your money elsewhere. And would you rather stay a shorter time at a nicer place, or a longer time at a more moderate? General advice for "not big eaters" or drinkers would be NOT to do AI. Find a place that includes continental breakfast, have a snack around lunch, and then a nice dinner. You'd save much over an all-inc.

Check in at the British Colonial Hotel in Nassau or the Comfort Suites on Paradise Island. There are McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, Dominoes Pizza (try the conch pizza), Sbarro's and a neat restaurant named Conch ____? across from the BC on Bay Street. Definately don't want to go AI. The Green Shutters just south of Parliament Park on Shirley Street is nice too, with historic ambience. You will not have a problem finding inexpensive to moderate priced restaurants along Bay Street. There's a ferry by Prince Edwards Wharf which goes to PI all day long. Pick up the Tourist News newspaper from your hotel or airport (found all over) for lists of activities and discount coupons as well. For example, you could go snorkeling with Stuart's Cove on South Ocean, and they'll pick you up and drive you back to your hotel, for $10 off with a coupon.Not advisable to walk around at night from Parliament Square to PI Bridge, and beyond.It's safe around BC Hotel to Parliament Square, even at night. I second Roberts picks. The British Colonial Hilton is a wonderful hotel.
Small private beach, but the grounds and hotel are beautiful, upscale and classy. Just steps from everything. Very professional Staff. Comfort Suites is also a good choice. It's not on the water, but only a block from the beach at Atlantis.
Another choice would be Nassau Beach Hotel on Cable Beach. The rooms are ordinary, but it's clean, comfortable and safe. The beach is fabulous.
Tons of great restaurants. World Class dining to very moderate. My fav would be Green Shutters, and Montegue Gardens. Lots of local food available at moderate prices as well.
Don't let others talk you out of visiting the bahamas. It's a wonderful destination for those who do their homework.

Not trying to talk Apple out of the Bahamas, just trying to determine his priorities for a recommendation. With a budget and time for 10-12 days, he could surprise his wife with just about anything. Since he says he doesn't know anything about the islands, I thought he might want to consider other places, too.
If you go to Nassau, Apple, Comfort Suites Paradise Island would give you full access to the aquariums and water parks at Atlantis. Very cool. And I've heard their own staff, esp around their pool and bar, are terrific.
A vacation is just an incredible birthday present. I'm sure you'll both have a great time no matter where you go!
