We are thinking of going to PR for a longer holiday next year. It would probably be all of Feb. and most of Mar. I would get a couple of nights booked in San Juan but then could a couple just take buses to other areas and get a decent place for a good price. Or should we plan out the trip and book hotels along the way. Also has anyone rented for this amount of time in a small house. We did this this winter in the Progreso Yucatan and loved it. Anyone familar with the bus system would be wonderful to hear from you. Wendy

HI Wendy, the bus system in San Juan works pretty well. I will be more than happy to tell you how it works but you check out [email protected]

Tried this link but all it is, is a email address. Really want to know if we really need to book accomodation after the first 2 nights and can we get around the island by bus or van. We are looking for sun and sand but with a little more adventure for some days. Wendy

It's going to depend on where you want to stay on the island and what you want to do, but if you want to stay off the beaten path (as in outside a resort or OSJ), then you'll probably need a car. A lot of the areas that were easily walkable were small towns with not a lot to do or close attractions, or San Juan. I didn't notice any buses outside of SJ, and only a few publicos. The publicos would drop you off at the main square- which would be bad if you don't know where you're going, or really how far it is. And you're stuck with the schedule they have- on time, or not, going straight there, or not, etc.
You're going in the height of high season, I think. You're more restricted by your plans if you have reservations, but you also know you'll have someplace to sleep, and a budgeted cost.
We stayed at Nelson's Country house in Naguabo for 4 nights. We loved it, but our one complaint was the inline water heater- as in a box that sat on the showerhead and heated a trickle of water.
You may want to consider Rincon as a home base for 3-4 weeks, then move into the rainforest at the beginning of March- remember, that's spring break, and it's not huge in PR, but it could be big enough to detract from your trip.
