Here's a start, Marko:

Whistler/Blackcomb is about a 1 1/2 hr drive from Vancouver as opposed to 5 or 6 hours (? - depending on weather) to Big White;

Whistler has a large selection of restaurants, shops, bars, clubs, grocery stops, spas, etc. while Big White has very few;

Many more runs for all ability levels at Whistler over Big White;

More crowded and noisy at Whistler;

Both resorts offer kids' camps and the usual alternatives to skiiing/boarding: ice skating, tubing, swimming, cross-country.

Our family found restaurant and grocery prices to be about the same at the two resorts, but Whistler was more expensive for accommodation.

We've visited Whistler/Blackcomb quite a few times, Big White only once. While we enjoyed Big White and it was a nice change from a large ski resort, we much prefer Whistler over Big White.

Good luck!

Marko: You may need a four-sided coin: If you're thinking of travelling to Fernie, you really should also consider Panorama.

Marko, you're from Australia, aren't you? If your family is travelling all that distance, why not try something new, like the Kootenays? Red Mountain is where my boys are yammering to go.

The Kootenay Mountains, Marko, in SE B.C. Here's a map: http://www.hellobc.com/NR/rdonlyres/...n_kootenay.jpg (sorry for the long URL).

I'm told Red Mountain is a premier skiing/boarding mountain - take a look at http://www.rossland.com/Seedo/skiboard.html and also do a google search.

Happy dreaming!
