Vancouver hotel help
Hi,
I am meeting mt brother-in-law and his soon to be fiance in Vancouver with my husband. They are staying at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre. For three night there would cost us over $860 which is out of our price range. We are hoping to find a hotel very near the Sheraton that is about $150 a night or less. Is this an impossible request??
Help me fellow Fodor experts!!
Thanks

I'm not a Vancouver expert, just someone who's been doing a lot of research for our June BC trip. Like you, we like to keep accommodations under $150 a night. We're booked at a hotel that's too far away for you (the Hampton Inn and Suites), but one of the places we were considering--the Howard Johnson Hotel Vancouver--might be close enough. It looks like it's about four blocks from the Sheraton (Burrard St.) to the HoJo (at Granville and Davie), but locals could tell you just how long those blocks are. The hotel (it calls itself a boutique hotel) looks quite a bit nicer than what I would have expected for a HoJo (good tripadvisor reviews, too). FYI: their website is www.hojovancouver.com. You don't mention when you're going, though. If it's not during the summer, you may be able to get rates under $150 at some of the nicer hotels, as it does seem that prices go up significantly come June. (Even the Sheraton website has some spring deals.) Good luck.

Hi travelbug,
Just an idea for you. Last year we went to Vancouver for a 5 day vacation. (Much too short. I want to go back!) Anyway, I tried Priceline for the 1st time. Put in "4 star" for the quality of hotels I wanted to stay at & got Sheraton Wall Centre for a bid of $100 a night. Of course, if you do their 'name your own price' (which I did) you can't be sure which hotel will accept your offer but it's easy enough to see which hotels in Vancouver are 4*. And Vancouver isn't a huge city so even if you don't get in the Sheraton, you wouldn't be far away. Well, that's my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps.

The Burrard Motor Inn is right beside the Wall Centre. It looks like a dump, but gets some positive reviews on Trip Advisor. The Century Plaza is almost directly across the street from the Wall Centre. No idea what it is like. The Sandman Suites on Davie is a couple of blocks from the Wall Centre, and I am told it is very nice.

The Century Plaza is OK in relation to your budget. It's big, boxy and mostly concrete but has the advantage of being right across the street from the Sheraton. www.century-plaza.com or sometimes you can get a cheaper rate on the Tourism Vancouver website: http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/accommodation/.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I found that the Ashby house has a couple rooms available. Does anyone have any opnions on this place?
They have
the MacNeill Whistler
and
the Oscar Wilde Room
Has anyone ever stayed in these rooms?

Goodness, use PRICELINE already !!!
Vancouver is a great Priceline city as the rooms aren't overpriced as they are in, say, Seattle. Furthermore, with Vancouver being so compact in the downtown area (the only direction it can grow anymore is "up"), you just won't be THAT far from anyone else who has a room in a downtown hotel.
If your "$150" refers to American money, then bid for "downtown Vancouver" hotels (4-star only, per our high-falutin' Priceline taste) beginning with a base bid of perhaps $50, and increasing by $5 per night with each bid.
Use www.biddingfortravel.com and learn about "free rebids"... of which there are at least 3 or 4 in the Vancouver area.
Start at $50 per night, then try $55, then $60, then $65... if that doesn't work, then wait 24 hours and maybe begin then at $60 per and increase the same $5 increments until successful.
I'm guessing you'll score a nice 4-star downtown Vancouver property beFORE you get to $80 U.S. per night, leaving you lots of money to take cabs to the other hotel, if need be. Your hotel may be in the better location so perhaps THEY shall have to take cabs to you.
If you need more coaching on Priceline, just ask.
