Urgent: Baie st cathrine- tadoussac

If I haven't had a misinterpretation, I have seen on my map that to get to Tadoussac coming from Quebec City you need to take a ferry with your car. As a matter of fact I thought there was a bridge. We'd like to go to Tadoussac to see the whales. Is it worth it? Do we need to take this ferry? Any idea of how long we need to stay in Tadoussac to do that? Isn't it possible to do whale cruises from Baie St. Catherine? Which of the two village is better? We are travelling mid August.
Thanks
Milli

There are cruises leaving from Baie-Ste-Catherine, which is a very small village with a few houses, a small grocery store, gas station and a handful of accomodation. Tadoussac is a tourist mecqua with much more services, a lot more options for walking the shore, etc. Yes, it is worth taking the ferry. It's free and usually very quick. What can make it long is the waiting line.

BTW, there are good chances of seeing whales from the shore, as well as from the ferry. The two villages are almost one village separated by the Saguenay river.

Since we are going there in mid August would the queue to the ferry be very long? And Another question: we intend to drive from Bar harbor all the way to Canada. Do you think it's possible to arrive to Tadoussac via Brunswick? And how do we cross the river to get to other side? Is there a bridge somewhere or we still have to take a ferry? Thanks again. Milli

Coming from New-Brunswick, you have to cross the St-Lawrence river in Matane or Rimopuski to arrive in Tadoussac from the north east. The St-Lawrence is 30+ miles across in those places so no bridge. It's better to have reservation for those ferries. I'd choose Rimouski over Matane (a stop at parc du Bic just west of Rimouski is worth a visit).

You can also cross the St-Lawrence in Rivière-du-Loup but you'llstill have to cross the Saguenay to get to Tadoussac.

As for the Saguenay ferry, it depends on time of day, number of boats, and luck. You could arrive and wait one minute... or one hour. Why are you in such a hurry?

Dear Erick you are right! But I'm just trying to do and see as much as I can and don't have a clear idea of how many nights for instance I need to stay in Tadoussac (one is enough or I need two) to organize tha whale watch tour. I need to optimize my vacation time. Thanks for your help and any further suggestion is most than welcomed. Milli
