Hi
We will be staying four days in Vancouver at the Listel Hotel . Any suggestions for restaurants close to our hotel?
Thanks

Hi Carioca
Fine choice of hotel! I don't know how 'close' a restaurant needs to be, but if you are prepared to take a short walk down to the waterfront, there's a lovely restaurant right beside the boat marina. Can't remember it's name, but has great atmosphere, good service and delicious food. Enjoy!

The Listel Hotel is very centrally located, with dozens of good restaurants and a few great ones within a 5-minute cab ride / 15-minute walk. In fact, 90% of the great restaurants in Greater Vancouver are within a 15-minute cab ride of your hotel. But, to answer your specific question, with reference to Robson Street (which the Listel is on):

1. There are two excellent high-end Italian restaurants about 2 blocks away called Cin Cin and Caffe de Medici. Cin Cin is a livelier room; Caffe de Medici is more white tablecloth in ambience. (By high-end, I mean that 3 courses including tax and tip but excluding alcohol will cost CAD$60-80 per person. A bargain by international standards!)

2. A less expensive but very good Italian-themed restaurant in the same block is called Savory Coast, a spin-off from Cin Cin. It has a nice second floor patio. I think is is the most underrated restaurant on Robson Street.

3. A steak/chop/seafood restaurant on Robson Street which visitors seem to enjoy is Joe Fortes. It, too, has a patio. Consistency is not one of its virtues, however.

4. One block South of Robson is a wonderful French restaurant, Le Crocodile.

5. Vancouver has some very good Indian restaurants. Taste of India, in the block next your hotel is one of them. It serves traditional Indian food, and is good value.

6. The restaurant in the Listel Hotel – O’Doul’s – is competent, but poor “food for value”. Same knock on the restaurants in the Empire Landmark and Pacific Palisades hotels, also on Robson Street. In fact, there are several excellent restaurants in Vancouver hotels (e.g. Diva at the Met), but they are relatively rare.

I think di2315 is talking about "Cardero's" at Coal Harbour Marina, and a stone's throw away from the Westin Bayshore. Eaten there many a time - love its Wok Squid - and always enjoy its deck. The other CHM restaurant - "Lift", on the west side of the Bayshore - is expensive and a different vibe than Cardero's.

"Au Cafe de Paris" on Denman at about Robson is a favourite as well.

See www.vanmag.com for a listing of some recommended restaurants.

My only reason for leaving Cafe de Paris off the list was its location, 6 blocks down the hill, but still closer than Coal Harbour. I love it.
