I am going to Quebec in August. I have found a site (www.fairmont.com), a famous hotel that has a virtual concierge on its home page (lower right) that lists the ten best of everyting in Quebec including dining choices for French, Italian, Swiss, etc.
I haven't personally tried the restaurants but take a look at the website and I bet you'll find something you like.

Gene Maloney

We were in Quebec City in June. We had a wonderful dining experience at Le Saint-Amour in Upper Old Town. Excellent dining with exceptional wine selection. Reservations advised. It was across the street from where we stayed - away from the many touristy places. We were there in July (5 days Montreal, 5 days Quebec City) and by far the best dining experience of the whole trip was at La Bastille, about 3 blocks from Le Chateau Frontenac. Aux Anciens Canadiens, on the other hand, was very disappointing ("tourist trap") despite the favorable guidbook reviews.

We just returned yesterday from Montreal and Quebec City. In QC, we are at a small place in the port area, Le Mesculun. It was wonderful. Not sure it's the destination restaurant, but it is one that should not be missed. It is owned by a couple from Nice, France, and the food and look of the place looks like you are in Provence.

Excellent.

Other hint: take the Aalard walking tour which begins at the Tourist Information Center adjacent to the Chateau Frontenac. The regular guide, Sebastian, is an architecture student at Laval University and is full of information about the city. About 2 1/2 hours. all downhill, fortunately!

We stayed at the Dominion 1912. Like everyone else on this board, we're now converts.

I second Linda's suggestion for dinner at Le Mesculun. We dined here shortly after restaurant opening; it is chef-owned. Chef is from Provence. Location: within very close walking distance to Hotel Dominion (our favorite QC hotel), located in Lower Town. If you are seeking a very special dinner, L'Initial is pricey but excellent.
Have a wonderful vacation!
