Ottawa-accomodations, dining and sights.

Thinking about visiting Ottawa this summer/early fall.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a great hotel in the $150 - $200 C range per night?

Also, any good restaurants to recommend? We like all types of cuisine.

Thanks!

When we were in Ottawa, we stayed at the Ottawa Marriott on Kent Street. It was a great hotel and we had a corner room with a balcony which overlooked Parliament. I believe the prices were closer to $200 CDN, but definitely within your price range.

Unfortunately, I forget where we ate. We did a lot of walking, perusing menus, etc... and just dropped into different restaurants.

The Fairmont Chateau Laurier is a great hotel and a landmark, but may be a bit beyond your budget in the summer and early fall. The Westin is also very good.

There are many in your price range downtown, including the Marriott. Some I might recommend are the Lord Elgin, the Delta Ottawa, and the Marriott Courtyard, which is nicely situated in the By-Ward Market area. ARC The.Hotel (pretentious name) is very stylish (see its website)and has an excellent restaurant.

There are many good restaurants in and around Ottawa. The two best and most expensive are Signatures and Le Baccara (at the Hull Casino). The market area is full of restaurants--you might check out Domus, Social, Clair de Lune, the Black Cat and Kinki. Nearby, Wilfrid's in the Chateau Laurier is excellent.

Further afield, is Beckta, the best new restaurant in Ottawa, and Juniper in the west end. There are many Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese restaurants on and around Somerset Ave West, although the very best in my opinion is the Mandarin Ogilvie in the east end. There are also many very good Itlain restaurants on Preston St., although La Scala on Bank is probably still the best. Across the river there are almost many fine restaurants, including Laurier sur Montcalm, and my favourite Les Fougères in Chelsea (you will need a car).

There are many other types of cuisine available in Ottawa including Middle Eastern, African, Central European, Spanish etc etc.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Ottawa.

Hi, I agree that the Chateau Laurier and Westin are probably the top two. I usually stay at the Delta or Minto. The Minto has more room and larger eat in facility. The Albert at Bay has been renovated and has some very nice roomy suites. The Delta has the water slide. The Crowne Plaza is also good.

I notice that you mention "sights" in the subject header. Just passing along to you a few interesting sights that I enjoyed while I was in Ottawa:

1. Canadian Museum of Civilization - Its location on the other side of the Ottawa River affords you a great panoramic view of the parliament buildings. Plus, you get to say that you were Quebec! The museum, itself, is definitely worth the visit.

2. National Gallery of Canada - If you appreciate art, then this is a great place to admire the works of some talented Canadian artists. At the time of my visit, The Group of Seven were on exhibition.

3. By Ward Market - This is a great area for a stroll. You are bound to find a good place to eat here.

4. Parliament Hill - There are many guided tours available; the one I enjoyed most was the Peace Tower tour, simply because the elevated height of the Tower gives visitors a bird's eye view of the city. During the day, there is a daily performance of the Changing of the Guards. In the evening, there is a sound and light show that is not to be missed.

Have a great time in Ottawa!
