NY bar car from Montreal

Message: Hi,
We are travelling down to NY from Montreal soon. Since I never been to NY before I have no clue how difficult it is to enter Manhattan. Expect the worst! The maps doesn't tell the full story. So which raod and bridge would be the best to enter Manhattan? Are staying at Best Western hotel Ambassador at 132 West 45th Street.
We were also thinking of spending the night in a town 1-2 hours before entering NY the next morning. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tintin

Tintin, Are you coming to Manhattan on a weekday or weekend? Yes, it makes a difference.

If it is on a weekday, try to come in after 9:30AM. The easiest way for you is take 87 down to exit 13 Palisades Parkway. Take the Parkway south to George Washington Bridge. Once on the bridge, keep to the right lane. Get off at the exit for Henry Hudson Parkway(West Side Highway?) South. Turn left at 42nd Street. Take 42nd Street to 6th Ave. Turn left to go up 6th Ave to 45th St. Your hotel should be between 6th Ave & 7th Ave.

Go onto yahoo.com and click under maps. You will get a very good and detailed description of the routes/exits to take.

Message: Thanks a lot,

It will be on a Friday. Since we will stay on a motel on the road 1-2 hours before NY I don´t think there is a risk for hitting the morning trffic. Thanks for the notice.

I got the proposal from a friend here in Montreal to head for the Lincoln tunnel. Any disadvantage using the tunnel? Apparently it's a toll tunnel.

Best Western hotel Ambassador at 132 West 45th Street is close to the Lincoln tunnel. The hotel also have an agreement with a garage close to Time Square.

Any nice city and hotel-motel to recommend on hte road?

Tintin, No matter which bridge or tunnel you take, you have to pay toll. The toll is $6.00 (collected from NJ to NY). There is no toll from NY to NJ.

The route that I stated is usually the fastest way. Yes, Lincoln Tunnel is closer to your hotel. I would listen to AM880 WCBS or AM1010 WINS before heading into the city.

Tintin, I just checked the map again. In order to take the Lincoln Tunnel, you will have to get on NJ Turnpike and/or Garden State Parkway. Both are toll roads. You have to pay between $1 to $2 depending on your route.

Posted before I finished my message.

Just the way Dave suggested.
Take 87 South to exit 13 Palisades Parkway. The Palisades South to George Washington Bridge. Keep to the right lane. Be careful on the ramp to get off at the exit for Henry Hudson Parkway (which is also called West Side Highway) SOUTH. Remember the signs will be for the Parkway South and Downtown

Be prepared for driving among many cars, buses and taxis on 42 street. It is not bad at all. Maybe a little more busy than Montreal but you will do fine. I find drivers in Manhattan more considered than those in in Athens or Rome

As to a place to stop on the way and not to far from the city? How about New Paltz? It is one hour from Manhattan, there are some very inexpensive motels, and if you arrive early enough you make visit Mohonk House. It is a wonderful place to walk around or take a short or long hike. Or this could be your place to stay just overnight. Have a great trip.
