Nova Scotia Lobster Roll
Hi guys, I've been to Nova Scotia few weeks ago. I enjoyed the lobster dinner and lobster roll there so much. However I would like to know which lobster restaurant is most known by local which have great lobster and seafood? Because the one I went to right at the Halifax dock ... seems like for tourist only...

Well, personally speaking I never order lobster when out because most of them are held in holding tanks. When locals purchase lobster it is usually from the fisherman directly off the wharf as they are unloading their catch for the day. Now that is what real lobster is all about!
However, having said that - probably the closest to a real experience is Hall's Harbour Lobster Pound on the wharf! http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/seafood/about.htm

I see on your website you tried the fried clams while on the Waterfront in Halifax. Parrsboro or the Five Island area of NS have the best, fresh clams I have ever had! We ate at a little restaurant past the Fundy Geological Museum (I believe the Harbourfront or Harbourview). They tasted like I had dug them myself that morning!

Ya ~~~ the clams I've tried at the Halifax dock was chewy and didn't have any clam tastes ... I wish I can have the fresh one again. Btw, does Nova Scotia people serve clams at raw like the oysters do ?

I.m a Maritimer, we eat Clams cooked, like mussels(steamed)... And we eat scallops fried in butter, never had them raw. And yes, lobster is fresh from the wharf.P.S. Cute, true story. My mother came from a poor family, growing up in the '30's in Rural PEI. Then only poorer familys ate lobster. She used to hide her lobster sandwiches at lunch, lest she be made fun of. Not any more!!

One of my favourite places to eat lobster is Stafford's Lobster Pound at Fox Point. It is located near Hubbards on the way to Chester. I recently had an excellent lobster sandwich at the Evangeline Inn in Grande Pre. Not a roll but a sandwich with lots of lobster for $7.00 approximately.

One of the worst places for lobster is a place called Killarney Lodge in Ontario near Algonquin Park. They served "Lobster Tails"( which consisted of one small lobster tail cut in two...so, about 2 small bites of lobster in total)....for $44!!(included salad or juice, soup, rice or potatoes(potatoes were cold...supposed to be roasted & hot), vegetables & dessert. So, don't go there for your lobster in Canada(I know this post is about NS Lobster but you often see Atlantic Lobster on menus in other parts of Canada...like Killarney lodge in Ontario!)

Lobster tails at Killarney Lodge? I'd hardly expect to find good lobster in the woods of Northern Ontario, several thousand kilometers from the ocean. If it were on the menu at $44, I'd certainly think twice before ordering it unless I could see the live lobsters swimming in the tank.
Now if they couldn't do a good job with fresh pickerel, that would be another story!

Yup, my DH (whose family is all northern Maine/southern Canadian Indian French Rednecks) has stories about his grandfather and how lobsters were 'poor-folk' food.
Even today, they won't eat crawdads, consider them insects. When DH went up there (he lived in Palm Beach) and they caught a bucket full and cooked them, all his cousins were amazed at how good those 'insects' tasted, and went out to catch more!

We were in Nova Scotia several years ago and stayed at a B&B called the Lamb and Lobster: in addition to the B&B the husband was a lobster fisherman and they raised sheep. I couldn't think of anything more exciting, gastromically, than being able to eat all the lamb and lobster you wanted. They, on the other hand, wanted anything but!
