No Tofino this weekend

CBC News reports that the water situation is so bad in Tofino that water is being restricted to residential use only...hotels are sending people home and cancelling reservations. BC Ferries does not offer refunds, so if you are going to Tofino this weekend (September 2-3), give your hotel a call and for heaven's sake don't make a ferry reservation. Tofino has not had any rain since June.

According to this morning's Seattle P-I, it pretty much snuck up on the powers that be...there'll be some heads rolling when it is all over. Ucluelet's mayor says that they are on an aquifer and can help Tofino if asked. Right now, the restaurants are being shut down and Tofino is not the place to be this weekend.

I was just watching the local Vancouver Island newscast; apparently things are in total chaos and the water that's being sent to Tofino from Ucluelet isn't properly chlorinated, so they're on a boil water advisory. What a mess! Apparently they've seen this coming for a while but hadn't imposed any water restrictions whatsoever over the past few weeks. This situation might well have been avoidable.
