Niagara on the Lake Restaurants

Any suggestions for a quiet romantic dinner on a Saturday night? We like trying different types of food, especially seafood.

If the weather's nice, dining on the terrace at Queen's Landing is magnificent. Lighter meals on the cocktail lounge side, haute cuisine on the main dining room side. Either is elegant and refined (but not the least bit stiff or snooty) inside as well. The main dining room, in fact, is positively gorgeous. Both are romantic (there are two fireplaces in the cocktail lounge, which is also fabulous for after dinner drinks/coffee) and QUIET. (Note, pricey, but worth it.)

It's curiously difficult to find fine dining where the noise level is not reminscent of the high school cafeteria, or where there is not at least one obnoxiusly loud party to ruin the atmosphere.

Worth the drive is "On the Twenty" (they have a website). One of the most romantic places we've ever visited.

More nearby is the Blue Mermaid in St-Catharine (they have a website as well). Upstairs is a lovely, intimate, dining room (reserve a table in a corner) with tableside preparations (and, they don't mind if you share one Cherries Jubilee). Downstairs is a comfortable lounge (with living room furniture/seating areas) where there's a fabulous piano player (check for nights he performs, Saturday for sure).

For a lovely lunch, head for the Epicurean and then the patio in the back.

DJKBooks is right on about Queens Landing. That restaurant is much better than the one in the Prince of Wales hotel--which I found no great shakes unless you want to look at paintings of Queen Victoria's children.

On the Twenty gets excellent reviews from everyone that has gone there, but I have not. I will be back in NOTL in August for 3 days and may try it for lunch. We shall see. . . .

On the Twenty is a terrific destination for lunch, as well as dinner.

Monica, just spent a couple of nights at Inn On the Twenty in Jordan. A very, very good place for either lunch or dinner, and the accommodations are first-rate. But it's a half-hour from NOTL, and there's something just as good...and I'm not kidding. Peller Estates Winery has a new restaurant at their plant just outside of NOTL.
I've only been there for lunch, but the food and service were as good as anything I've ever had in Canada...period, and I'm not given to gushing. The menu is a little simpler than Inn on the Twenty's, but the results are a tad ahead. And the dining room is beautifully done...not particularly intimate but warm, comfortable, classy, with service that I can only describe as superb. Better than Inn on the Twenty (which shows a hint of attitude depending upon the server). You really should try it at least once--their prix-fixe lunch of three courses is $CDN29.95 and you can also order a la carte, and dine for less. It's at the east end of East-West Line, it's new and it is a FIND. Ask for service from "Lou". More at www.peller.com
