Niagara Falls Itinerary

Going to Niagara Falls next weekend, arriving Friday late afternoon and staying at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Contemplating Saturday doing Maid of the Mist, Behind the Falls, and Butterfly Conservatory. The remainder of Saturday/Sunday, NOTL and the wineries. Departing Monday morning.

Any "not to miss" places I should see/do over the weekend?

Casino, if you care for these kinds of things, and the Niagara Parks Commission greenhouses, upriver a few hundred yards from the Horseshoe Falls.

In Niagara on the Lake there is (or was last time I was there)the Tricia Romance art gallery, with lots of her pictures and, in complete contrat, pictures by Alex Colville., It's free and I love to see the contrat in art styles. Just off the main street, opposite the park, on a road that runs down to the river.

Buy fudge in NotL, if not for yourself, for some kids you must know.

Have fun.

BAK, not much into Casinos -- would rather spend my money on a nice dinner and good bottle of wine. It's our anniversary.

I will check out the art gallery. Not much of a fudge person, but I love to spoil my grandchildren.

If you are planning to celebrate an anniversary than I would make a reservation for dinner at Vineland. It is about 15-20 miuntes by car from NOTL. It is superb! All local ingredients, impeccably prepared and the wine is wonderful, especially the gewurstraminer and resil;ing. The owner is from Germany where his family owned the St. Urbanshof winery. Go early so you can stock up on some bottles to take home - the pinot noir and ice wines are amazing as well. And did I mention the grounds - beautiful overlooking the vineyards with the lake off inthe distance.

Little girls love Tricia Romance paintings (which usually have little girls in party dresses in them), and there are postcards, little prints, etc., so if the grandchildren are little girls, you might get something to spoil them with.

Thanks BAK. I will do that. I have a 2YO grand duaghter.

I assumed Vineland was a winery. Looked up their website. Liked what I saw, booked dinner for Saturday night. Thanks, JillD, for the recommendation.

Budman-
Glad you checked it out, it really is quite exceptional and I think reasonable given the setting/food/wine preparations. Check out the adjacent stone building used for private functions, it is usually open all the time unless a private function is going on - beautiful. Enjoy and have a happy anniversary!

Jill,

The weekend was wonderful. Did the Henry the VIII feast at the Buttery on Friday evening. Outstanding!! It rained most of the day on Saturday, but the early evening the sun came out, and we had a very special dinner at Vineland on their patio. It was great!!

Had lunch the following day at Peller and was very much impressed with both their wine and cuisine.

Maid of the Mist was a "must do" as was the Butterfly Conservatory. One of the highlights of the Conservatory was that I wore a bright shirt and a beautiful butterfly landed on my shoulder. Got some great photos from from and rear.

I am originally from NF so I can help you out here.
Vineland is a winery and it is also a little town. I think the restaurant the previous poster was talking about is called Inn on the Twenty (www.innonthetwenty.com). It is excellent and you will have to make a reservation.

If you want a thrill go on the Whirlpool Jet Boat (www.whirlpooljet.com). It is in Niagara on the lake. This is a jet boat ride throught the whirlpool rapids. It is amazing. You get soaked so bring a change of clothes (do not go on the covered boat). It costs about $45 CDN/person but is well worth it for the hour ride. You also must make reservations.

You can rent bikes and take a nice ride along the Niagara River Parkway - it is very beautiful and is along the Niagara River.

Definitely go to a winery Peller Estates and Iniskillin are 2 good ones.

Do the Maid of the Mist but you can skip the journey behind the Falls

Just a small point of clarification ...

Inn on the Twenty is located in the town of Jordan. I believe that its associated with the winery called Cave Spring Cellars. www.innonthetwenty.com

Vineland Estates Winery is located in the town of Vineland. Its a winery that also has a restaurant on-site. I believe that this is the restaurant that contributors are referring to as "Vineland". www.vineland.com
