Newfoundland in April

Is it worth going to Newfoundland in early April?
How cold is it? Are all the roads open?
What is there to see this time of year?

In early April Newfoundland is still in late winter meaning there is likely to be many days with sub freezing temperatures and snow. The roads are open because in Nfld this is considered normal weather. The scenery is breathtaking and extraordinairy although it's probably too early to watch the icebergs heading south. That doesn't usually start till late April.

April would be a terrific time to do a visit to Newfoundland that used St. John's as the base. The town has much to offer in the way of history, beauty, culture and excellent food.

You could then make day trips to scenic areas around the Avalon Peninsula because, as GaryA points out, Newfoundlanders (not "Newfies", please) are used to snow and handle it with ease and the roads surrounding St. John's and Conception Bay South are excellent. You might see snow but it is unlikely that it would stick around.

Newfoundland is certainly worth a visit at any time, however April is not the best time for weather, as noted by others above. For culture, history, music and scenery the St. John's area in April would be fine although some of the interpretive centres [such as at Cape Spear] would be closed. Should you want to see whales, seabirds, caribou and other natural attractions late June through early August is the time to visit.
