Hotel De La Montagne

My husband and I are planning a road trip to Montreal in July. My father's family is orginally from Montreal and this is my first trip so I am looking forward to it. After doing some research, we have made reservations at Hotel De La Montagne. Has anyone stayed there? Would really appreciate any comments about the hotel and the general area it is in. Also, would like some comments regarding really good restaurants in the vicinity (Italian, steak, French, etc...thanks!

I'm from Montreal, so I don't stay at local hotels too often. However, many business associates of mine only swear by Hôtel de la Montagne. So I guess, it must be good.
I do eat out a lot. So here are my persomal favorites:

In the vicinity of Hôtel de la Montagne :

L'entrecôte St-Jean (French-style steak and juliennes fries). De Maisonneuve & Peel. Reservations a must on week-ends.

DaVinci. Italian. Bishop near René-Lévesque.

Les Halles: Classic French. Crescent near De Maisonneuve.

La Queue de Cheval: Steakhouse (expensive). René-Lévesque & Drummond.

Piment Rouge: Chinese. Peel, on Place du Canada. More expensive than most chinese restaurants, but really elegant and excellent food.

Not in immediate vicinity, but really good:

Le petit extra: French Bistro. Ontario near Papineau. (reservations a must)

L'express: French Bistro. St-Denis near Rachel. (reservations a must)

Chez Lévesque: French Bistro. Laurier near du Parc.

Laurier BBQ: Montreal-style BBQ chicken. Laurier near du Parc. Inexpensive and good.

Taverne Magnan: Steak & Roast Beef. Charlevoix & St-Patrick. Danger: highly addictive.

Tokyo: Sushi. St-Paul near St-François-Xavier.

La Taverne Monkland: International Fusion. Monkland & Marcil.

Chez Chung Mei: Chinese. Queen Mary, near Westbury. Inexpensive and excellent.

Le Muscadin: Italian. Notre-Dame, near McGill.

Hope this helps

When in Montreal, we always stay at Hotel de la Montagne---mostly because of the great location & also the lively bar in the foyer. As for restaurants, we really enjoy the restaurant upstairs at Thursday's---Thursday's is the happening bar joined to the Hotel---I forget the name of the restaurant on the top floor, but we've never been disappointed & you can reserve. I am not talking about the really expensive restaurant on the mezzanine floor, expensive & fancy. Most Montral restaurants have the prices posted outside. Friends of ours love Gibbey's also.

We've just returned from our umpteenth stay at Hotel de la Montagne and we loved it as always. Each time we return, there are noticeable improvements - by that I mean they are constantly upgrading everything, even though the hotel is just fine as it is. Here's another recommendation for Le Beaux Jeudi (Thursdays) bistro on the top floor. Sunday brunch there is positively magnificent. Our favorite restaurants within walking distance are Le Paris on rue St-Catherine for wonderful French comfort food in a vintage restaurant. For fine dining, we love Le Lutecia right in the hotel and Guy & Dodo Morali on rue Metcalfe, where the welcome is warm, the room is beautiful and comfortable, and the food is wonderful.

Thanks Donna..I think you are the cheerleader for this hotel. It was from your postings alone on this site that I made the decision to make reservations at the hotel.

We LOVE the view from the rooms on the upper floors (12 or above) overlooking rue Crescent!

We are staying at Hotel De La Montagne. Need desperate help for a hotel in Quebec.

Would love to stay in a hotel along these lines. Having a harder time. Thinking of just staying at the Hilton.
