Home base for day trips.

We will have 8-9 days in NS, any suggestions about home base so we can take day trips may spend 2-3 days in each base to cover some of the highlights? and is this way of traveling is the best way to see the most?
Thanks for your reply.
George

Hi George, my first home base would be Halifax, That would be close to Peggy's Cove as well as all the halifax & surounding areas. Pier 21 The Citadel ect. My next home base would be Sydney Cape Breton, its centrally located & close to The Cabot Trail, The Fortress of Louisbourg, The Cape Breton Miners' Museum, Baddeck,St. Ann's Gaelic College just to name a few. I would spend at least 3 days in these 2 spots & have a couple ofextra days to explore the nooks & crannys off the beaten paths you'll be glad you did. Enjoy Nova Scotia...

The suggestions in the previous post are good! Halifax is a great base - don't forget about a day trip to the Annapolis Valley! Wolfville is a lovely college town - very folksy! Grand Pre, the home of Evangeline, has just finished a new interpretative centre - great spot to spend an hour or so! The Grand Pre Winery is close by - great restaurant! Halls Harbour - just a short drive away - is a great spot to have a lobster dinner right on the wharf! You may get a chance to see how low the tides really do get there! If you like historic houses, Uniacke House (a provincial museum) is just a short drive from Halifax - with many kilometers of hiking trails that snake around the lake! It is a beautiful spot!

Great suggestions! However, I wld. choose Baddeck as my "home base" instead of Sydney. If you are flying out of Sydney then you can see the Miners' Museum on your way to the airport.

Dear wow, I think you must be mixed up some how. Glace Bay is where the Miners Museum is not on the way to the airport from Sydney. The Airport is 15 min. away from Glace Bay in the other direction. also I would advise any one going to the miners museum that they give more than the alotted time for the tour ect. Not only do they have a lot to offer in the museum itself as in artifacts, but take the time to talk to your miner guide see through his eyes of what mining did to families here on the island in there own words. Believe me it makes quite a difference. If you go there ask to see a gentlemen by the name of abby malhalic you'll be entertained for hours with stories. But don't take my word for it. Try it your self.

Thank you CB101 & I can understand why you wld think I am mixed up! But I am not. I know where Glace Bay is and I know where the Sydney airport is having flown in & out of it on a regular basis for over 35 years!!! I was not speaking literally when I said "on your way to the airport". What I mean is this: If George is in Baddeck & flying out of Sydney he cld. drive to Glace Bay, visit the Miners' Museum and then continue on his way to the Sydney airport. In any event, the point may be moot if George is not flying out of Sydney!

When I did my trip to NS in 1992 (I know--a long time ago), we had a home exchange in Bedford (right outside Halifax). On Cape Breton we stayed in Baddeck and did the Bell Museum, Fort Louisbourg and the Cabot trail. We did not have time to do the mine, whale/bird watching or the Marconi station (We had been whale watching out of Plymouth, MA, the year before).

In PEI we made advance reservation for the "Anne of Green Gables" musical (obligatory when a daughter who has read all the books is in tow). We stayed overnight on the north side of the island.

If I had to point to one highlight of the trip it was whitewater rafting on the Bay of Fundy tidal bore in Schubenacadie, NS. That is north of Halifax.

I do agree with moving around to different base camps to do the sightseeing. NS is quite large and there was a lot on our agenda we did not do--such as the Annapolis Valley and the National Park in western NS.

Some day I am going to get back there. Wonderful place!
