Connecticut to Nova Scotia

Hi guys,

I am planning on traveling up to canada from CT for about 4-5 days of sight seeing, I know this is not much time to visit but what are the must sees/do that we can cram in in the Nova Scotia area if we are driving? Would like to include a stop at Bay of Fundy... Thanks so much!

(sigh) This brings back memories... although my first such effort was from Boston.

If I were in your shoes, I would perhaps draw a big, red "X" on a map of the area, right on the spot that is Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick.

I'm sure you can get that far in, AND it is the one spot where you probably get the most pronounced effect of the power of the Fundy tides.

For others with a similarly small window of time, and/or perhaps knowing a different starting point(Halifax airport, for example?) (and different priorities), there could be a different main target.

Hartford, CT (as a central point of reference) is just over 600 miles from Hopewell Cape, NB... requiring about 10 hours of driving time.

IF you want to do more, and really push it, you probably COULD reach Baddeck, NS for a loop of the Cabot Trail, but it would proooooooobably mean not seeing Halifax, and not seeing too much else at anything less than a car's pace.

But lets see...

If it were me, working with the "4-5 days" you have, I would perhaps choose the Saint John, NB area for a first night (after 500 miles / 8 hours) from Hartford. That's a hall, but you have to hustle to get the most out of any effort you'd make.

Next day you have 108 miles 2 hours 6 minutes from Saint John to Hopewell Cape, where you want to time your visit to coincide with LOW tide. (or an hour either way)

Definitely PRINT THE TIDE TABLE for the entire window of your trip, for perhaps 3 destinations... including Hopewell Cape, Truro, and perhaps some other, random one.

Baddeck remains an additional 282 miles and 5 hours of driving from Hopewell Cape... and you'd have to be kinda lucky with the tide tables to make that long day as reasonable as it could get.

A day beginning in Saint John, passing through Fundy National Park, and then Hopewell Cape, before eventually ending in Baddeck, NS, would entail Four Hundred Miles and about 7 hours of driving time.

For so doing, you would earn yourself the seeming luxury of booking two nights in Baddeck, with the catch being that you'd target another day of driving 185 miles / 4 1/2 hours in between (which is the complete Baddeck-to-Baddeck circuit of the Cabot Trail).

Then, maybe you would target Fredericton, NB area for your last night on the quick journey (but perhaps more ideally across the border and into the states, just to have THAT delay behind you)... and then still another drive back to Hartford (or wherever).

Baddeck to Hartford = 900 miles / 13 hrs. 36 min. (Fredericton, NB is 371 miles in)

That whole plan, as laid-out there, requires nearly 2000 miles, and 33 hours on the road. I myself would be up for it, if that's all the time I had, but other, more reasonable people might only shoot for Hopewell Cape as an eastern-most destination (perhaps with a token trip into Nova Scotia merely to say you've been there

On the bright side, a whole lot of Nova Scotia can be appreciated considerably from a vehicle. (oh, and it should be noted, that you have to go pretty far up the Fundy shore to really gain any appreciation for its uniqueness)

At the very least, check out the Hopewell Cape tide table just to see if the tides happen to land right on the day after you would leave CT, to where you could tour Hopewell Cape at a time suitable to having so many more hours of driving to do after leaving Hopewell Cape.
