Boutique hotel in Vancouver?
My husband and I will be visiting Vancouver and are interested in a smaller, more modern "design" hotel. We found the Opus Hotel, but have read mixed reviews. We're not familiar with the Yaletown area either. We'd appreciate any other hotel suggestions, or recent feedback on Opus. Thanks in advance for your help.

I stayed at the Opus in February and thought it was fine--my room was very nice and comfortable. It's a little too self-consciously hip for its own good though, for my taste, and while I love Yaletown, I prefer to stay in a more central location. My favorite boutique hotel is the Wedgewood, but it's definitely more traditional decor.

Thanks very much for your quick reply. We were a little worried it was on the "too-hip" side as well(we're on the very northern edge of our 30's
), but really don't care much for traditional decor. We had seen the Wedgewood, and except for the decor thought it looked great. We're only going to be in town for 1 night on our way to Tofino, so the central location doesn't matter as much, and we thought we'd explore Yaletown. It sounds like we may not be able to get all that we want, but Vancouver is such an amazing city that I know we'll enjoy ourselves. Again, thanks for your help!

For one night, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Opus and being in Yaletown. Not sure when you're visiting, but definitely ask about the construction nearby (for a light rail station), and if it's still going on, then ask for a room away from the construction (although I was there on a weekend so there was no construction noise). If you can, I'd spring for a room that's at least one level up from the basic room--the tub and separate shower in the deluxe rooms are really nice.

Yaletown's not in the physical heart of downtown, but you could walk there in 20 minutes if you must - distances downtown are small, and Yaletown occupies the south-eastern corner of it.
Expect of lots restaurants, one of a kind boutiques, and lots of yuppies with tiny dogs in their purses.

Hi, We stayed at the Opus for our Xmas party and loved it. It has modern decor. check out the bathroom in the bar off the lobby, very cool. It wasn't too hip for us and we're very close to 50. Just up the street is one of my favorite breakfast places called the Elbow room. The Opus is close to restaurants, a short walk to the water bus to Granville Island and Yaletown is a great place to meander and shop. Hopefully the weather will be O.K. when your here but if not the concierge at the opus has umbrellas for loan.

Not a fan of the Opus. After a few years, it's looking run down, furniture looking old and dirty carpets (last we walked into the entry in July.) Modern look, but comes off as cheap. We just adore the Wedgewood Hotel. One of the classiest and Bacchus restaurant is fabulous for both lunch and dinner.
