Montreal can get quite steamy in mid summer - definitely bring your warm weather clothes. However, evenings can dip into the low 60's on occasion (not likely in early August). Summertime weather in Montreal is not too much different than the northeastern US, the summer season is just shorter. Unless your hiking in a wooded area out in the countryside, you won't need any kind of bug repellant.
Think New York city minus about 5 degrees.

While I'm not a fashion expert, I have lived in Montreal for two recent summers, and shorts and sleeveless tops are fine.

However, if you care about fashiuon, be forewarned; Montreal women are the best dressed in North America, at least in the opinion of lots of women I know who pay special attention to dressing when visiting the city.

There's no need to feel intimidated; instead, think of your visit as a good excuse to wear your best summer clothes.

The food is as good as the fashion, so style, whether culinary or clothing, makes Montreal a good place to visit.

Enjoy yourselves. leave room in your suitcase, because you may find yourselves buying clothes, too.

BAK
We just came back from 3 days in Montreal and were right in the middle of a heat wave - - the previous poster was right about the fashionable Montreal women - - my husband and cousin's husband will attest to that ! However if you have on nice summer shorts and sleeves tops you will not be out of place. We spent a lot of time outdoors - down by the Old Port, etc. and never saw as much as a fly - - so I don't think the bug repellant will be necessary - in fact we also went to Quebec City and were surprised at how many homes had windows open with no screens. Be sure to do some shopping - the clothes are very up to date and with the US dollar strong you will get some good buys. Enjoy!

Your replies brings a question to mind for me. We will be visiting Montreal in September and wonder what the dress is for dinner. Are jackets and/or ties necessary for men, for example? Not necessarily talking about 4-star restaurants, but good ones. Thanks!

We went shopping upon our arrival in Montreal from Boston (doesn't everyone) and were starving around dinnertime. We were directed to a restaurant LeCaveau (I'm not sure of the spelling)by a local for a good meal. When we got there I was fearful that we were improperly dressed (I had on "nice" jeans and a summer top and hubby had on shorts and a summer shirt - my cousins traveling with us were dressed the same)the owner of the restaurant met us at the door and assured us that we were properly attired. I must say that we were probably the most casually dressed in the restaurant but were warmly welcomed and had a fabulous meal. The restaurant looks like a cottage in the middle of modern buildings and was so romantic inside. Our waiter did not hurry us at all and we were very comfortable there. I think if your attire is neat and clean and your manner the same you will be welcome in most places. In fact in our 3 days in Montreal and 4 days in Quebec City our husbands never wore a jacket and tie and we ate at some lovely restaurants - always feeling at home and comfortable. I think the key is nice casual - as you would in any city in the summer.
