Any suggestions for a golf trip to Alberta and British Columbia?
My husband and I would like to take a golf vacation out west for about a week. Can anyone suggest some really nice courses, and where to stay in both Alberta and B.C? We are not great golfers, so we are looking for scenic, rather than challenging golf courses.

Since we need to be in Edmonton in mid-August, our itinerary will either have to begin or end there.

We would prefer locations that can be reached in not more than one day's drive....less if possible, so that we don't spend most of our time in the car. Is that realistic, or will we need to fly to different destinations in order to experience the nicer courses?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I'd recommend Radium, B.C. as a base for a few days--it's very beautiful and there are a number of excellent courses in the area. I played on two lovely courses last summer, but I forget the names. I'll ask my hubby and report back. After Radium, you can head toward Calgary, stopping to play the Banff Springs course or the Kananaskis course on the way. Then the next day, you could play which ever one you missed the day before (or play others in the Canmore area). Actually, you might prefer Canmore as a base over Calgary. Now you've got me jealous. I had so much fun in Radium last summer, I want to be there now!

Went last August - It is Fantastic!!
Flew into Calgary, drove to Banff. Did not play golf there. Drove over the mountains to Radium Hot Springs. Stayed at The Radium Resort ( www.radiumresort.com). We were there for a week and played: The Radium Springs course, about 10 minutes from the Resort; the Radium course; Eagle Ranch(www.eagleranchresort.com) and Greywolf(www.greywolfgolf.com). Greywolf is a REAL mountain course with unbelievable scenery. All 4 are great courses. Greywolf is outside of Invermere & About 45 minutes from Radium.Eagle is 20 minutes away. Have at least one meal in THE STRAND, in Invermere. Food is great and the price is super.
We then went to JAsper and came back to Canmore & stayed there 3 nites at a super B&B - Homestead B&B. Wonderful home cooked FULL breakfast. Eggs, sausage, panckes etc.,etc. We played golf at the Canmore Golf Club and down in Kananaskis(www.kananaskisgolf.com). Kanan again is Fantastic. They have 2 courses, we played Mt Kidd but it is first class, so I know the other course will be fine also. Another good web site is: bcrockies.com; bbcanada.com; toourismcanmore.com; discoveralberta.com.
We were going back again this year but decided to head for Quebec City and check out that area.
You will love it!!
If I can help further, just let me know.
Jim

Thank you for your replies. I have never heard of Radium, Invermere, Canmore, or Kananaskis, but I did locate all of them, except, Kananaskis on a map of B.C. and Alberta.

I really appreciate all the web sites, and the names to look up.

Do any of you know the approximate driving times between these areas?

What does Canmore offer over Clagary as a base? I have never been to Calgary, so I don't know what I would be missing.

Also, is there any reason to fly (drive?) to Whistler for golfing, or is that a waste of time?

Whistler is beautiful, but if you only have a week, you might feel too rushed. Plus, you'd want to see Vancouver while you're there, leaving you less time for golf.

Calgary vs. Canmore -- Calgary is a nice city with good restaurants, good golf, etc., but it's not so unique that you'd feel you missed anything by not staying there. Canmore is a town right outside of Banff, surrounded by mountains, with a lot of wonderful golf courses within easy driving distance. Calgary is only about an hour away, so you could easily visit Calgary if you wanted. Likewise, you could stay in Calgary and do day trips to Canmore, Banff, Kananaskis, etc. BTW, Kananaskis is an area (a provincial park), not a town, between Banff and Calgary. Check out freetrip.com for driving distances, times, directions.

p.s., my husband couldn't remember the name of the golf course we liked so much in Radium, but we think it was the Radium Resort course. Jim mentioned it, along with some other wonderful courses.
