VAncouver - whale watching?

We will be spending 2-1/2 days in the Vancouver area after a golf trip to Whistler with our 18 & 22 year old sons. Whale watching sounds like fun. Does anyone know if we can take whale watching cruise straight from Vancouver, or do we have to access one of those from Van. Island? Any other exciting adventures from the island? WE are debating whether to even go to Victoria--since the boys do not get into sightseeing or shopping. Since we have only a short time in Vancouver, anybody have any suggestions for 1 or 2 great, memorable activities to do there?

You can go whale watching from Steveston in Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver.

Well, looking at the map, Richmand is quite a distance from Victoria and the orcas islands. Obviously the whales do not stay in one place, but isn't it less likely we'd see them in Richmond than out of Victoria?

Also, how much in advance should we make whale watching reservations? Do the outfitters get totally booked in the summer?

Thank you.

Yes you CAN go WW out of Steveston-IF it's not too rough that day and the Zodiac operators are willing to go-they have to traverse the Staright of Georgia and it can be rough for a small boat.

The Boys won't be as badly beat up as you by the crossing and probably won't need a toilet for all that time either-they are open boats.

So that's all to the good.

http://www.richmondtallships.ca/ is a big event in Steveston this year-does it coincide with your visit-if so be advised it'll be packed!

A great memorable activity for a young fellow-not that I'm a YF anymore(!)- would be Kayaking around Howe Sound, or Indian Arm or even the Gulf Islands.

www.ecomarine.com is a good place to start as is http://www.deepcovekayak.com/

Just a sllight correction to the post of Carl Z. All the whale watching boats out of Steveston have toilets and 2 of the three boats they use are actually covered. Only the little 12 passenger zodiak is open.

The whales you see out of Richmond are the same ones you see out of Victoria ( Pods J,K,L ) They are resident pods and travel, almost daily, between the San Jan Islands and aroung the mouth of the Fraser River at Richmond. How far you have to go to find them on any given day, depends on where they are.

The Steveston group loses on average 3 days a month because it is too windy to get out around the mouth of the Fraser. Don't know the down time for the Victoria operators
