5 hour layover in Toronto on a Tuesday

I will be traveling from Chicago to Istanbul with a 5 hour layover in YYZ. I arrive in Toronto at 6:24p, my flight leaves at 11:25p. Do you think this is enough time to get to the city, grab something to eat, and not miss my flight? If I take a taxi or the bus, is there a lot of traffic during these times? 6:25p sound like rush hour time?

The airport is very far from the Citycentre... no way is it worth the stress ... Consider eating in or around the airport...

It is possible to go downtown and back with the time you have available, but you won't really know how much time you have until you have cleared Canadian customs and immigration.

You won't have to worry about rush hour traffic, however. The Union Pearson rapid transit train takes you from Pearson to Union Station in the heart of downtown in 25 minutes and it runs every 15 minutes. There are plenty of good restaurants within a few minutes' walk from Union Station.

So let's say you can take the UP Express at 7:30, arrive downtown at 8:00. You would then have about 2 hours available before taking the return UP at 10:00, arriving back at Pearson an hour before your flight to Istanbul, which should be enough time to clear security and get to your gate.

I'm a cautious traveller and would probably stay at the airport, but you may be comfortable with this.

When i have a longish layover i sometimes take a free shuttle bus to one of the nicer hotels just to get out of the airport and eat there. usually there is a calm atmosphere and from some reason the lighting and air refresh me more than staying at the airport.
