Will we get away with it?

My fiance and I will be staying at the Sofitel Ia Ora in Moorea for our honeymoon in late June. I had heard that they were going to be doing renovations so I sent an e-mail to the hotel and mentioned that we would be staying in a beach hut for 5 nts. and an overwater for 1 nt. and inquired about possibly getting a renovated room. A woman wrote me back and said she had us booked for an overwater hut for all 6 nights!

We booked through a travel agent and the trip has been paid in full but the itinerary reads beach hut 5 nts, OW 1 nt. Do you think we'll get away with it? What a sweet wedding gift that would make!

Just wondering if anyone might have a similar story (with good news) to share

Aren't you the lucky ones, and congratulations! I bet you do "get away with it", but don't feel too guilty about it... you are probably doing them a favour. If they are in the middle of renovations, it makes sense for them to clear out a wing which may only have one or two occupied rooms by upgrading the guests to a part of the establishment not affected by the work. I can't tell you about an identical episode, but this did remind me of my family's experience at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where we got a last-minute New Year's booking of a family room in the cheapest wing for what I thought was a very reasonable price of $US65 for the four of us. On arrival, the receptionist asked us if we'd mind taking instead a suite in the Grand Tower, with a view right up the strip, a jacuzzi, and all the other luxuries we didn't pay for, no extra charge as "it would help our housekeeping". My bet is that this is what you are doing for the Sofitel... so enjoy it with a clear conscience!

I think you will absolutely "get away with it"...sounds like you got an upgrade as it was to their advantage, as Neil said.

Just to "hedge your bet" I would email them again (attn: woman who emailed you in the first place) and ask them to email that confirmation showing the overwater. You have an itinerary from your agent showing one thing and them telling you something different. Get them to email you the overwater and present that when you check in....once it's in writing they better deliver!

Thanks for your responses. I just have to clear things up a bit though. The woman that responded to my e-mail mentioned that the renovations hadn't started yet and that we shouldn't worry about it during our stay. She said when she looked up our reservation WE had booked an OW for the duration of the stay but I know we only paid for 1 nt. in the OW. So I think it sounds more like a mistake than an upgrade since there won't be any construction.

Any thoughts?

BTW, good to hear others getting upgrades during their vacations!

I don't quite understand your concern. You paid for 1 night OW and 5 nights beach hut. If you end up spending all 6 nights OW so much the better. On the other hand the if during your stay you are moved back to the beach hut no harm done since that's what you paid for. Chances are, if you were told that the resort has you down for 6 nights OW that's what you will get regardless of what you paid. Resorts frequently upgrade guests if they are not at full occupancy. Relax and enjoy your stay no matter what room you are in - besides you probably won't be spending too much time indoors anyway (except when you are sleeping or otherwise engaged). Have a great honeymoon.

Almost a year later but I guess I should let everyone know that we did get away with it. I guess it might be worth trying out for others...the overwater is AWESOME!
