I am heading to Cairns for 5 days in mid August and am starting to get bambozzled with all the accom. options available.

Should we (hubby and I) stay in Cairns or the Northern beaches. We are after a quiet location, preferably somewhere away from the clubs, bars and noisy night scene. We like to sleep at night as opposed to party.

Would the Northern Beaches region be too far from the action?

Would Cairns be too close too the action?

Any advice from those in the know?

Read the post down a bit about Lilybank B&B and the great restaurant which is close by. You would be quiet there and also get all the information available on where the best places to go to and see are.

By the sound of it and I am just guessing here, Cairns would be too busy for what you want for your particular holiday.
Northern beaches are perfect for what you describe, although you need a local to explain the pros and cons of holidays in August.
There is Port Douglas which is much smaller than Cairns but my personal choice would be Palm Cove (smaller still).
You would be very happy at Palm Cove.
It sounds like just what you are after.

We stayed in Cairns (April) in the Trdewinds Esplanade - asked for a quiet room and got it. Its at the north end of the Esplanade, away from the noisy bit. Also stayed in Palm Cove (Novotel) which is certainly quieter, maybe too quiet - not much there apart from the beach strip. Nice tho, but depends on the weather - it wasnt great when we were there.

We also like to sleep at night when on holiday and found The Hotel Cairns, corner of Florence and Abbot Streets, to be very comfortable. It is on the edge of the town, and one block back from the wonderful Cairns esplanade. It is an easy walk to the centre of Cairns, yet is quiet. Both visits we have stayed in the Tower block with a bit of a view across to the water, which is around $140 Australian a night.

Palm Cove looks good Muck, I have just been checking out that website. I am still confused but am leaning ( at this stage anyway) to the beach area.

I live in 'sunny' Wales and I can tell you that if I had the choice of visiting any other place in the world, it would certainly be Palm Cove.

Checkout the Kewarra Beach resort in palm Cove . We have not been there but we plan to stay there in Dec. any inputs?

Kewarra Beach Resort isn't at Palm Cove, it's at Kewarra Beach, south of Palm Cove. Its in a residential very quiet area - Palm Cove has more tourist infrastructure, apartments/resorts/restaurants. Palm Cove is much quieter than Cairns and still smaller than Port Douglas, which is more spread out.

When we were in Cairns last April and May we stayed at Lilybank B&B.
At the north end of town it is convenient to the airport ( although not under a flight path) and an easy out to the northern beaches and the Daintree and Cape Trib. Its also only a 10 minute drive to the boat docks for the reef or some of the excellent restaurants downtown like Red Earth, but out of the hub bub ( now what's the origin of that term?)

The fabulous Garden Room scene of our 2 best meals down under is a 5 minute walk. Leafy Stratford is peaceful and pretty.

But the best part is you get to meet Pat and Mike and their girls and enjoy beautiful accomodation, great breakfasts and fine company.

Pat has written the book on N. Queensland for this site and I imagine if you should ask her a question she can't answer she'll probably comp you a night!
