Best place to stay: Cairns, Trinity or Palm Cove?

Visiting this area for 4-5 days without a car except perhaps to rent for 1 day to drive up to Cape Tribulation. Also want to tour GBR and scenic railway. Love beaches, water views and ocean swimming but Nov is stinger season so best to stay out of the water even with nets? (holes, smaller jellyfish etc). So best to stay in Cairns to access all and restaurants, shopping etc or not?

Do yourself a favor and stay in Port Douglas-it is wonderful! Cute town with lots of fun restaurants,shops,4 mile beach at your doorstop and the GBR. Palm Cove is nice but remote to me and Cairns is pretty tacky.

Palm Cove is my personal favourite - pretty, smaller than Port Douglas, good choice of accommodation and with a regular bus service to Cairns. Nice beach for walking even if you don't want to enter the water.

Hello Maylis!

The choice between the three places depends on what kind of trip you're looking for. Those looking for a serene trip in a relatively smaller town love their days spent in Palm Cove and Port Douglas. Cairns is looked forward by people who like to meet people partying in pubs and clubs.

Both places are less than an hour's drive from Cairns.

Staying at Port Douglas is a better idea. You wouldn't miss on any awesome shopping or good restaurants, access to GBR. And anyway, since you say you love beaches, you will have to come down to either of the two places because Cairns doesn't really have a beach of its own!!!

Have a great trip!!!

Thanks for all the tips. Think we"ll stay in PD for 3 nites and either PC or Cairns for the other 2 depending on where we can get a great hotel with sea view @ pool for reasonable cost. Any suggestions?

Personally, I would stay in one or other location for all 5 days, rather than moving halfway through and I certainly wouldn't bother staying in Cairns (unless, as vagabond1408 says, you "like to meet people partying in pubs and clubs".
I would probably opt to stay in Palm Cove and visit Port Douglas on the way to Cape Tribulation.

Almost all the hotels/resorts in Palm Cove have a sea view, because they're mostly on a single strip along Williams Esplanade, opposite the beach. Whether your room has a sea view will depend on how much of a premium you're willing to pay. All the ones we've ever stayed at have a pool. As for "reasonable cost", a bit like beauty, that's in the eye of the beholder! Can you define "reasonable" for us? Take a look on wotif for the dates you're interested in to see what's available at what price point.

You can also look at Street View on Google Maps to get a sense of what the places look like. The horrendous-looking link below should bring up a view of the Peppers Resort at Palm Cove (and you can navigate from there). As you will see, some of the rooms have a "sea view" (and some also come with their own pool on the balcony.....) but most of the rooms are at the back, around the lagoon-style pool.

My opinion-Port Douglas should be your base so you can do the daytrips/snorkel trips and go to the Mossman Gorge,Daintree, etc. We drove up to Cape Tribulation and all we found were young hippies trying to find themselves with limited choices in eating?
Palm Cove is gorgeous, more expensive but very small with lots of apartments dotting the boulevard and an older crowd.
Cairns was just described to me by an Aussie (i am still here in Sydney on vacation and talking about places we have been) as a tacky backpackers/surfers spot. I was just glad we only spent one night there on our way to Port Douglas.
