Hi, x!
I will let a Taswegian answer for his/her state, but as far as Sydney is concerned, I can tell you in one word: fan-tas-tic! You won't ever do better than October, though April is probably its equal. If you're coming in the first half of October, do try also to visit Canberra -- it's only a three-and-a-half hour drive -- for their Floriade festival. Have a great time!

Hi Alan!

Thanks for your reply. I am so excited now. But by 'fan-tas-tic', do you mean sunny or sunny with a nice cool breeze? Do you have a rough temperature idea?

I'm just wondering what kind of a jacket I would need as well.

Thanks again,

X

I too am wondering about what type of coat will be needed. We want to travel light and avoid carrying bulky coats, but will be be too cold for the sourther part of the trip (Sydney and Melbourne in late October first few days of November)? Is a sweatshirt and a light jacket enough for the coldest weather we are likely to find?

Melbourne can be ANYTHING at ANYTIME - can start out very cold, then rain, then get hot ending up with a nice day or it could be lovely all day or it could be terrible all day, but for Sydney you can expect lovely sunny days and about 25 deg Celcius. Tassie should be sunny and about 18 - cool at night though.

Was in Sydney and Melbourne about 3 weeks ago. Wore shorts (with a long-sleeve t-shirt) every day in Sydney--even tried a brief swim at Manly Beach (still a bit chilly!). Melbourne was cooler but pleasant. I generally wore a light sweater/pullover in the mornings, which I discarded as the day progressed and the temperature rose.

I went thru 8 Octobers in Tassie. You might be very lucky and hit a long spell of good weather, but there are some really cold southerlies that come up from Macquarie Island that time of year, horizontal rain, vile wind, temps around 9C. Remember, it's where you are in Tas that counts. East coast and north central are usually very nice; S/west is often cold and windy; ditto for west and for Hobart. It's a gorgeous place, tho, and the vile wx usuually passes thru quickly. Stay inside or go to a museum. The magnificent Tas rainforests are ONLY good to visit when it is cloudy and a bit drizzly. Good for pix then, too.
