Uluru Accomodations

Looking for comments on Sails in the Desert Resort. Have booked this hotel for an upcoming visit and wondering what past guests have to say about their overall experience ie rooms, service, food etc.

We got upgraded to Sails in the Desert in 2004 so were wildly enthusiastic about everything. The rooms are large and comfortable, but really just a motel room (but remember WHERE this particular motel room is!!) The bathrooms are very nice and the linens on the bed are excellent. We had a peek-a-boo view of Uluru, too, which made it special. We did not eat at the hotel but wanted to go out to different places (and the restaurants didn't look all that special). The shop sold lovely (expensive) things. The people were very nice and helpful. Enjoy your trip to this special place!

Thanks Sally,

We too have previously stayed at the resort but it was at least 10 + yrs. ago so I just wanted to know what condition the place was in now. I know it is described as 5 star but even during our previous visit those many years ago, I wouldn't consider it in that category. It was comfortable and our overall experience was quite positive and you are right one has to take into consideration it's remote locale.

Would you happen to know if it is possible to travel to Kings Canyon and back by car in a day? We didn't see this area last time. Also did you do the dinner under the stars and if so was it worthwhile.
Thanks.

We stayed at the Desert Gardens and thought it was nice, but nothing else. We walked through the Sails area and thought again that it looked nice, but 5 star? No. But its certainly a nice place to stay.

We did Kings Canyon from Ayers in a day by car. We left at around 8am. The drive is rather desolate but watch for camels and wild horses. We did the rim walk starting at a little after 11am. We did the hike in a little over 3 hours and went to the Kings Canyon resort for lunch. Its not an easy hike(and we were there in Dec so it was HOT), but its not too bad if you're in decent shape. Make sure you take the side hikes including the one down into the Garden of Eden. After that we were back at Ayers before sunset.

Gartorshill,

Thank you for your comments. I have another question and would like to know what condition the roads are in and is a true 4x4 vehicle necessary for the trip. Thanks.

The roads to there are all fine, well maintained paved roads. You dont need a 4x4. We had one, but you really dont need one. Even if you rent a 4x4 you're not supposed to be on unpaved roads with them according to your rental agreement.

One note, many of the trails near Ayers have places to replenish water. There are none on the Kings Canyon trail so make sure you bring plenty of water with you.

We didn't do the Sounds of Silence dinner, but many people here have raved (and a few ranted) about it. Do a search above and see what you get. We wanted to do the observatory trip but the leader person was unavailable (plus the skies were cloudy) so that didn't work out. But it is an option there if you don't want to do the dinner.

My family and I did the Sounds of Silence Dinner 3 years ago. We loved it. Started with champagne and canapes at sunset overlooking Uluru and the Olgas..fabulous view. We then took a 5 min. walk to the area where we ate. Started with a person playing the didgeridoo (sp?) while pumpkin soup was served. It got COLD (we where there in August) but had very clear skies. An astronomer gave a wonderful talk on the night sky. We still talk about that night and how we had such a good time.

Agree with previous comment by BarbAnn.
We did this two years ago and found it to be one of the highlights of our entire trip to Australia. I must admit that I was initially concerned about the high cost, but now feel that it was a totally unique experience and worth every penny. It is much more than the food they serve you.

If I had anything to do over again, I would take a small digital camera with us. Despite this being a nighttime event, there is plenty of daylight for pictures when the champagne and canapes are served at sunset.

If you have a chance to go, book early!

We arrived Sails on Desert midday, checked with the concierge. Lined up sounds of Silence dinner and two tours for the next day. AM sunrise Uluru and sunset Kata Tjuta with a small tour group.
I cannot compare the hotel with the others in the compound, but our room was terrific in all regards. But realize, this is pretty remote and in generally inhospitable conditions. Its not the Ritz.
We spent extra money for all of this, but would not have done it any other way. Enjoyed it immensely. A unique experience found no where else in the world.

BillJ,

Glad to hear something positive about this hotel because most of the reviews I have read are not very good with lots of complaints about the resort overall, including food and rooms needing refurbishing, etc.

We are booked for a 4 night stay so I was a bit concerned after so many negative comments. Also pleased to hear that the staff are very accommodating etc.

We are Aussies who have been to Ayers Rock twice-the whole town is owned/managed by one company- and they have a captive market.... i am sure you will enjoy but the best part is Uluru and the Olgas........we stayed in Desert Garden , 1st row of accommodation facing the approach into village and had a great view of the ROCK-
do the helicopter flight at dusk over both of them.
have a great holiday!
