I was in Ireland and did not tune in the news for two weeks. At the airport, I checked the news sites, and this was the first thing I saw. I wanted to crawl into a hole somewhere and never come out.

My deepest empathies for what many Australians must have felt/been feeling.

I would also like to add my sincere condolences to the people of Australia, and to all Nations who lost citizens in Bali. Like another poster said, I am not sure where to best express my sympathies, but I think that several Aussies read this Fodors forum.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

I ran across the following today:

"In a videotape purportedly showing al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, the British Broadcasting Corp. said Saturday that bin Laden singles out Australia as an enemy of Islam, because Australia helped East Timor gain independence from Indonesia."

I just wanted to say that I admired Australia's position on East Timor. You took the lead in stopping the terror in East Timor. I imagine it would have been easy to turn a blind eye to the situation, but you didn't.

After the horror of Bali, you might be questioning whether if you should have got involved. Just be reassured that protecting the underprivileged is always the right thing to do. Bravo Australia!!!
