Singapore is not very big and it is very easy to get around in this island. In the city center, you can get to most places on the subway ... clean and very efficient. As soon as you land in Singapore Changgi Airport, on the way to baggage claim, you can pick up lots of great info on what to see and do. Certain times of the year there are festivals: Indians, Chinese, Malays make up the bulk of the population, so between them they have a slew of festivals. If you're travelling with kids, definitely the zoo, and the Night Safari is great for adults and kids. If you like Orchids ... there is an orchid garden. Bird Park is another good visit. You'll have to use the info that you picked up at the airport and explore the different neighbourhoods. I enjoyed going to Little India and Chinatown a lot. There's a nice little hotel in Chinatown that you might want to stay at - I'll have to dig up the name for you. will post it tomorrow. Food is what you have to explore. Each time you are in a new neighbourhood, you have to try the food. Indian curries, bread ... Nonya cooking: Laksa. Sugarcane juice from the stalls. Shopping is another must in SIngapore ... you can buy some 'sari' material while you are in Little India, give it to your girlfriend or mother ... they make a lovely evening dress. have fun.

The hotel in Chinatown is Royal Peacock. on Keong Saik Rd. I believe. Another one is the Duxton. When do you leave? If there is time I'll work on fax or phone on these hotels. cheers.

Those hotels are more than USD 50.00 but less than USD 100.00. Very nice and clean. Rooms are on the small side. Great ambience. Lived in Melbourne back in the 70s, but I'm from Indonesia. Are you working in Oz or just travelling? Are you planning on just doing the eastcoast, or west and north as well?

You're too helpful for your own good !!! - You should'nt have told me you once lived in Australia !!!
I'm only travelling round when i go but i kick off in 'Melbourne' (!) then I've got about 25 days to end up in Cairns (by hire car - long drive I know !) , I then get a flight to Alice for 3 days then fly back to Melbourne and back via Singapore...You're from Indonesia - travelled a bit then !!! i've been to Jakarta - loved it !!!
Where do you live now ? Ever been to Britain ? lovely place ! Any info you want you know who to ask !!!! (I charge very reasonable B&B rates ?!?!?)
Anything i shouldn't miss in or around Melbourne ?
Thanks again Julie !! - sorry to be a pain !

if u enjoy theme park & stuff such as fantasy island.. then sentosa's is the place for you to go.. corcodile farm is so.. so... from a local's advice.. you will be better off at sentosa or other fun places to be... if u like shopping, people watch & genrally soaking up the atmosphere, i suggest a visit to orchard road, just walk down the stretch...
i'm sure u'll have fun !!! (i'll be in britain for a holiday soon !) enjoy your stay in sunny s'pore.. it's sorching hot now !!!

There is a stretch of cheap accomodation in Singapore, along Bencoolen Street, in the middle of the civic district, just off the main commercial stretch. There are many hotels/backpacker lodges in this area, and prices vary from S$30-S$100, depending on the type of room. Conditions can be moderate to spartan. And the scale of the establishment vary from small 3 storey row houses to a 20-storey buildings.

Please browse around our Housing Estates too.
Public and Private. There are great too! Also
try neighbour shopping centres too as they are great
bargain and less crowd like in Orchard Road. Hope you have a NICE TIME IN SINGAPORE. GREAT WELCOME!

Hi Sean,
Read your stuff about going to Sing.then on to Australia. I lived in Sing. three years, and now live in Melbourne. Are you from Voyager, as in THE company? Kind of have an interest there...my brother used to have a company once, in that area (ODC). Anyway, how old are you? I can list a few bars, etc. to go to (we just moved from Singapore to Melbourne in Feb.). Also, Melbourne is a fairly nice place, and I can give you ideas there, as well You'll like it.Give me an idea of things you might be interested in.

dear sean,
i`m fr singapore.why come to spore? it`s just another boring, faceless, cultureless, soulless clinical city. unless u like man-made attractions which are not even half as good as Disney come here.but if u really want to know visit Night Safari and Sentosa island. for atmosphere try Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. i suggest stopping over at Bali or Phuket, Thailand. you`d see more of SEAsia that way.
Regards, Wein

Mikael: I think the validity of entry permit is mostly 14 days for tourist. What you can do on you last few days is to go to Johor Bahru (Malaysia) by bus, make a short visit there and then when you get back in, you get another 2 weeks else you can get extend your permit at the Immigration Office in Singapore. If you want more info, you can write to me. SL

Hi,

I'm planning a trip to Singapore from De. 27th thru Jan 10. WHile I'm there, I'd also like to take day trips to Thailand, Malaysia, or Indonesia. Is this possible? What type of visa is required for entry? Can this get very expensive? Is it worth doing? Also, what type of accomodations are avail (Student rates is my budget) in these countries in case I have to overnight it there? THanks.

Rita

MK- do check out this website for more update on the haze condition in Singapore and Malaysia.
outhttp://web3.asia1.com.sg/tnp/pages/hazy.html
Rita - The nearest side trip you can do is Johore, Malaysia as Thailand and Indonesia is too far out for side trip. For visa - you have to call each immigration dept in your respective country and shouldn't be charged for them. There are budgets hotel or hostel available in all the places you have mentioned. Ciao!

We stayed at the Traders Hotel; reasonable prices (approx S$138), next to a mall and supermarket, convenient to Orchard Road (shopping!!!), friendly staff. Call (65-7382222) or fax (65-8314314) for more details. Enjoy!
