The Sofitel is an excellent hotel in a great location, "The Paris end" of Collins Street. It is multi storied with food courts, shops etc. A perfect choice for a honeymoon. The Adelphi is a much smaller boutique style hotel in Flinders Lane. It has the excellent restaurant ezard at the adelphi, but to be honest you are surrounded by excellent restaurants at both hotels and for a honeymoon my recommendation would be The Sofitel.

The Westin is very close to the Sofitel on the same street and is just fantastic. I stayed there twice and wouldn't stay any where else in Melbourne. It's located right next to the theater, if you'd like to see a musical while in town.

I love the Adelphi, even if it is a little over-designed. The breakfast is great and they have a fabulous collection of works by Australian photographers (museum quality). If you stay there have a look at each floor as they are different artist on each level.

There's a sauna and a lap pool on the roof that overhangs the street so you can look down at the street below. Just beware of the nightclub above, Saturday nights can be quite loud.

Well I am going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons.

The refurbished Grand Hyatt in Collins Street has re-openned .Consider it .They just spent 45 million refurbishing it .Lovely position adjacent to the Sofitel .Wonderful restaurant called MoMo due to reopen serving middle eastern food like you have never seen nor eaten .

I like the Sofitel because it has wonderful views from the rooms which are on the 35th floor .

The Adelphi has undergone a partial refurbishment of public areas but not all rooms.Excellent cantilevered rooftop pool with glass bottom looking down onto the street below as you do laps .
Make sure building work is not going on when you might be there .

The Windsor is looking very tired.Awaiting a massive refurbishment that will put the zing back into it .But nice to visit and look at this old Vicvtorian gem and Melbourne icon.

The Langham at Southbank is good and in a nice position .5 star.

People do love The Westin .Lovely position surrounded ( as all the Collins Street hotels are ) by 3 blocks of shops like Chanel , Hermes , Gucci etc etc .

The Prince of Wales in St Kilda is a fabulous boutique hotel near the beach and with great food at Circa The Prince or Cafe Di Stasio nearby .

JohnFitz, I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to rush off to the refurbished Grand Hyatt. It will no doubt be fabulous eventually but when I went through the lobby and restaurant area about 3 weeks ago to see what all the hype was about, there were still parts that were under construction which left me feeling quite underwhelmed.

I'm not sure but I think I read that the rooms weren't going to be refurbed until after the public areas so that will be longer still.

Yes I agree with you shandy. We had lunch at the Collins Kitchen the other day as we had been regulars at the Plane Tree cafe. It is very smart with excellent food, but apart from the lobby, the bar and the cafe their is still is a lot of work to be done. Perhaps in another couple of months.

I usually stay at the Grand Hyatt in October, but this year went to the Hyatt on the Park (or whatever it's called .... just about 10 mins walk away) and it was delightful. Think I'll swap to it for future Caulfield Cup trips.

Bokhara the Park Hyatt is rated above the Grand Hyatt in the Hyatt structure so pleasing to hear it lived up to its name . It is in a lovely position near the park and Cathedral etc .
I seem to recall that you were going to book a dinner for a birthday or with overseas friends at somewhere nice when in Melbourne.Did you ? Where did you go and were you pleased ? John
